The Topeka Metropolitan Statistical Area, as defined by the United States Census Bureau, is an area consisting of five counties in northeastern Kansas, anchored by the city of Topeka. In total, it has an area of 3,290.15 square miles. As of the 2020 census, the MSA had a population of 233,152. Auburn, Kansas
Auburn is a city in Shawnee County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 1,273. History 19th century In July 1854, John W. Brown came to this area and found it highly suitable for a homestead. He acquired through bartering with local Indians and later returned home to Missouri to tell his family and friends about the area, some of whom returned with him. In 1856, Mr. Brown, along with M. C. Dickey, Loring Farnsworth and Henry Fox pre-empted for the purpose of a town. They christened it Brownville, although it was changed in 1857 to its present name of "Auburn" due to the fact there was another settlement with the same name. This was before the introduction of postal codes. It was located on the California Road and work began at once on the many buildings needed in a town of Brownville's size. Hoyt, Kansas
Hoyt is a city in Jackson County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 593. History Hoyt was founded in 1886. It was named for George Henry Hoyt, an abolitionist and attorney for John Brown. The Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad originally passed through Hoyt and in the late 1890s and early 1900s, Hoyt was a large cattle and hay shipping point between St. Joseph, Missouri and Herington, Kansas. The Rock Island Line, as it was often referred to, last operated in 1980. Today there is little trace left of the railroad line except through aerial photography. Eskridge, Kansas
Eskridge is a city in Wabaunsee County, Kansas, Wabaunsee County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 United States census, 2020 census, the population of the city was 439. History Eskridge was laid out in 1868. The town experienced growth in 1880 when the railroad was built through it. Eskridge is named for Charles V. Burlingame, Kansas
Burlingame is a city in Osage County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 971. History Burlingame was originally established as Council City and was a stop on the Santa Fe Trail. The Council City post office was opened on April 30, 1855. The wide brick main street, Santa Fe Avenue, was built wide enough for an oxen team to be able to make a U-turn. The city and post office name was changed from Council City to Burlingame on January 30, 1858, in honor of Anson Burlingame. Alma is a city in and the county seat of Wabaunsee County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 802. History 19th century For millennia, the land now known as Kansas was inhabited by Native Americans. In 1803, most of modern Kansas was secured by the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase. Osage City is a city in Osage County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 2,861. History Osage City was surveyed and platted in late 1869, after the route of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway had been fixed, but before it had been built to the city. Osage City was incorporated as a city in April 1872. Like Osage County, the city was named for the Osage Nation. Osage City was a very busy coal mining town in the 19th century.
