Tooele County ( ) is a County (United States), county in the U.S. state of Utah. As of the 2020 United States census, the population was 72,698. Its county seat and largest city is Tooele, Utah, Tooele. The county was created in 1850 and organized the following year. Tooele County is part of the Salt Lake City, UT Salt Lake City metropolitan area, Metropolitan Statistical Area. A 2008 CNNMoney.com article identified Tooele as the County (United States), U.S. county experiencing the greatest job growth since 2000. The western half is mostly covered by the Great Salt Lake Desert and includes the city of Wendover, Utah, Wendover (the immediate neighbor of West Wendover, Nevada) and Ibapah, Utah, Ibapah. Tooele County Courthouse And City Hall
The Tooele County Courthouse and City Hall, located at 39 E. Vine St. in Tooele, Utah, was built in 1867. It includes Greek Revival architecture, Greek Revival-inspired architecture. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. It is significant as the earliest (as known in 1983) and only surviving "temple-form" city hall in the state of Utah. According to its NRHP nomination, the "temple-form, which typically has its short end to the street and a pedimented gable facade in imitation of monumental classical buildings, originated in the Greek Revival period of American building, and was the first and most common building type used in Utah's early public buildings." Dugway Proving Ground (DPG) is a United States Army facility established in 1942 to test biological and chemical weapons, located about southwest of Salt Lake City, Utah and south of the Utah Test and Training Range. Mercur, Utah
Mercur is a historical Underground mining (hard rock), hard rock mining ghost town in Tooele County, Utah, Tooele County, Utah, United States. In 1891, it became the site of the first successful use of the cyanide process of gold extraction in the United States, the dominant metallurgy today. Its elevation above sea level is approximately 2,042 m. The nearby Mercur Gold Mine was re-opened by Barrick Gold in 1985, with mining operations again coming to an end in 1997. Ophir, Utah
Ophir is a census-designated place in Tooele County, Utah, United States. It is part of the Salt Lake City, Utah Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 24 at the 2020 census, a decrease of 14 from the 2010 figure of 38. History Ophir was named for the nearby canyon and mining district, where gold, silver-lead deposits were found in the 1860s. The mining district was named for the biblical Ophir, from where King Solomon brought back gold to Israel. In 1911, zinc was recovered and various mining operations continued until 1959. Prior to 2016, Ophir was one of the smallest incorporated municipalities in Utah. However, after a town government could not be formed from the remaining citizens in 2016, the town was disincorporated. Stockton is a town in Tooele County, Utah, United States. It is part of the Salt Lake City, Utah Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 616 at the 2010 census. History Stockton was born of the first mining boom in the Utah Territory. The mining industry began in the early 1860s with the arrival of Col. Patrick E. Connor, commander of the Third California Volunteers, who had been sent to the territory in 1862 to keep an eye on the overland mail routes during the Civil War. Connor wanted to counterbalance his perceived dominance of Mormon leaders in the area by exploring and developing the territory's mineral wealth. Tooele Army Depot (TEAD) is a United States Army Joint Munitions Command post in Tooele County, Utah. It serves as a storage site for war reserve and training ammunition. The depot stores, issues, receives, renovates, modifies, maintains and demilitarizes conventional munitions. Stansbury Park, Utah
Stansbury Park is a census-designated place (CDP) in Tooele County, Utah, United States. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 9,851, up from the 2010 figure of 5,145. Stansbury Park is located in the northern end of Tooele Valley at the base of the Oquirrh Mountains. Traveling by Interstate 80, Stansbury Park is 35 minutes from downtown Salt Lake City. Stansbury Park was proposed by the original developer (Terracor) as a planned community with a lake for sailing and canoeing, an eighteen-hole golf course, clubhouse, swimming pool, and parks. Although the original developer withdrew from the scene in the 1980s due to bankruptcy, that plan has generally been followed. Lake Point, Utah
Lake Point is a city on the eastern edge of northern Tooele County, Utah, Tooele County, Utah, United States. It is located 17 miles southwest of Salt Lake City International Airport and 11 miles north of Tooele, Utah.
