Studio Pottery
Studio pottery is pottery made by professional and amateur ceramists working alone or in small groups, making unique items or short runs, especially those that are not intended for daily use as crockery. Brannam Pottery
Brannam Pottery was a British pottery started by Thomas Backway Brannam in Barnstaple, Devon, England, in 1848. It later became part of the "rustic" wing of the art pottery movement. History Thomas Brannam took over the lease of an existing pottery at North Walk, and another in Litchdon Street, Barnstaple. Like other pottery firms of the time, the firm originally made utilitarian wares such as basic household items, floor tiles, bricks and sewage pipes. This was their "bread and butter" trade, although one of their decorative jugs secured a medal at the Great Exhibition in 1851. In 1867 Thomas's son, Charles Hubert Brannam, left school at age 12 to start work at the pottery. Charles won a prize for art at school and also won the Queen's Prize for Drawing in 1870. Ethical Pot
The term "ethical pot" was coined by Oliver Watson in his book ''Studio Pottery: Twentieth Century British Ceramics in the Victoria and Albert Museum'' to describe a 20th-century trend in studio pottery that favoured plain, utilitarian ceramics. Watson said that the ethical pot, "lovingly made in the correct way and with the correct attitude, would contain a spiritual and moral dimension." Its leading proponents were Bernard Leach and a more controversial group of post-war British studio potters. They were theoretically opposed to the ''expressive pots'' or '' fine art pots'' of potters such as William Staite Murray, Lucie Rie and Hans Coper. The ''ethical pot'' theory and style was popularized by Bernard Leach in ''A Potter's Book'' (1940). He expanded the theories that ethical pots should be utilitarian, "naturally shaped" and originally as conceived should derive from "Oriental forms that transcended mere good looks." Hans Coper
Hans Coper (8 April 1920 – 16 June 1981) was an influential German-born British studio potter. His work is often coupled with that of Lucie Rie due to their close association, even though their best known work differs dramatically, with Rie's being less sculptural, while Coper's was much more abstract, but also always functional. Coper always made functional vessels, principally containers for flowers (vases), fruit (bowls), or candles (candle holders), including work for Coventry Cathedral and Sussex University meeting house. Lucie Rie
Dame Lucie Rie, (16 March 1902 – 1 April 1995) () was an Austrian-born, independent, British studio potter. She is known for her extensive technical knowledge, her meticulously detailed experimentation with glazes and with firing and her unusual decorative techniques. Biography Early years and education Lucie Gomperz was born in Vienna, the youngest child of Gisela and Benjamin Gomperz, a Jewish medical doctor who was a consultant to Sigmund Freud. Dora Billington
Dora May Billington (1890–1968) was an English teacher of Ceramic art, pottery, a writer and a studio pottery, studio potter. Her own work explored the possibilities of painting on pottery. As head of the pottery department at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London (later the Central School of Art and Design), she promoted the idea of clay as an artistic medium with boundless creative potential. Waistel Cooper
Waistel Cooper (19 April 1921 – 15 January 2003) was a British studio potter. Biography Cooper was born in Ayr, Scotland and initially studied painting at Hospitalfield School of Art during 1937 and 1938. At Hospitalfield, Waistel was taught by James Cowie who used Waistel as a model for his masterpiece 'An Outdoor School of Painting', in collection of the Tate Gallery. Waistel's fellow students at Hospitalfield included Robert MacBryde, Robert Colquhoun, Patrick Hennessey and Robert Henderson Blythe. Subsequently, Waistel won a painting scholarship to Edinburgh College of Art, though these studies were interrupted by World War II. William Staite Murray
William Staite Murray (1881–1962) was an English studio potter. Biography He was born in Deptford, London and attended pottery classes at Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts from 1909 - 1912. He worked with Cuthbert Hamilton, a member of the Vorticist group, at the Yeoman Pottery in Kensington before joining the army in 1915. In 1919, after his military service, he set up his own pottery in Rotherhithe, London in the premises of his brother's engineering and foundry works. Although initially influenced by the avant-garde art of the time he became increasingly interested in early Chinese ceramics, under the influence of which he began making high-fired stoneware in an oil-fired kiln. Bernard Leach
Bernard Howell Leach (5 January 1887 – 6 May 1979) was a British studio potter and art teacher. He is regarded as the "Father of British studio pottery". Biography Early years (Japan) Leach was born in Hong Kong. His mother Eleanor (née Sharp) died in childbirth. He spent his first three years in Japan with his father, Andrew Leach, until he moved back to Hong Kong in 1890. Arts And Crafts Movement
The Arts and Crafts movement was an international trend in the decorative and fine arts that developed earliest and most fully in the British Isles and subsequently spread across the British Empire and to the rest of Europe and America. William Moorcroft (potter)
William Moorcroft (1872–1945) was an England, English potter who founded the Moorcroft pottery business. Early and personal life William Moorcroft was born in Burslem, Staffordshire. He studied art at Burslem then in London and Paris. Moorcroft married Florence Nora Fleay Lovibond (1879–1926) in 1913. They had a daughter, Beatrice (1914) and a son, Walter (1917).
