''An Encyclopaedia of New Zealand'' is an official encyclopaedia about New Zealand, published in three volumes by the New Zealand Government in 1966. Edited by Alexander Hare McLintock, the parliamentary historian, assisted by two others, it contained over 1,800 articles and 900 biographies, written by 359 contributing authors. The Government commissioned the encyclopaedia in 1959 and McLintock started work on it in mid-1960. Wayne Kimber
Wayne Allan Kimber (1949 – 22 May 2004) was a New Zealand politician of the National Party. He was born in Auckland in 1949. Professional career Kimber was a town planner by profession and worked for Gisborne City Council. His research led to the establishment of the Greater East Cape Tourism Council, which was renamed to Eastland Tourism Council and then Tourism Eastland. He went to Waipawa in 1997, where he had an executive role with Central Hawke's Bay District Council, including its acting chief executive. William George Malone
Lieutenant Colonel William George Malone (24 January 1859 – 8 August 1915) was an officer in the New Zealand Expeditionary Force who served in the First World War. He commanded the Wellington Infantry Battalion during the Gallipoli Campaign, and was killed in action by friendly fire during the Battle of Chunuk Bair. Born in England, Malone emigrated to New Zealand in 1880 and joined the New Zealand Armed Constabulary. After two years service in the Taranaki region, he worked at Ōpunake and later took up farming on land he bought with his brother near Stratford. He studied to become a lawyer and worked in New Plymouth in partnership with other lawyers but later set up his own practice in Stratford. A volunteer in New Zealand's militia, he helped raise the Stratford Rifle Volunteers. Brian Jeffares
Brian Robert Jeffares is a New Zealand local-body politician. He is an elected member of Taranaki Regional Council and the Taranaki District Health Board, and was mayor of Stratford from 1998 to 2007. Jeffares has a background in building and real estate, and also some radio work. Jeffares and his wife Diann have three children. David Walter (New Zealand Politician)
David Ernest Walter (25 November 1939 – 5 September 2020) was a New Zealand politician and journalist. He was the first mayor of Stratford District Council (1989–1998) and also served as chairman of both of the Taranaki Regional Council (2001–2007) and the Stratford County Council (1983–1989). Early life and family Walter was born on 25 November 1939 in Straftord, the son of Anita Walter (née Frethey) and Edward Ernest Walter. He was the grandson of former County Chairman and Member of Parliament Edward Walter, brother of former diplomat Neil Walter, nephew of All Black Jack Walter, and cousin of All Black Alan Smith. Edward Walter
Edward Walter (15 January 1866 – 30 January 1932) was a New Zealand politician from Taranaki. Life Walter was born on 14 January 1866 in Stratton, Cornwall, England, and baptised on 8 February 1866, in Stratton Parish Church. He was the son of John Walter and Nancy Player Smith, who married on 4 April 1865, in Bude Haven Parish, Cornwall. His father was a yeoman, of Kilkhampton. At the time of his son's baptism he was recorded as an Inn Keeper, the same occupation as his father-in-law. Edward Walter married Louise King Jones in 1901 in New Zealand, and they had five children. She died at 36 years of age in 1910. George Boon
George Counsell Boon FSA (20 September 1927 - 31 August 1994) was a British archaeologist, numismatist, and museum curator. He was known for his work on the Roman sites of Caerleon and Silchester. Early years Boon was born in Bristol on the 20th of September 1927 and studied Latin at Bristol University under Arnaldo Momigliano. Percy Thomson
Percy Thomson (17 November 1884 – 24 August 1962) was a New Zealand lawyer and politician. He served as mayor of Stratford from 1929 to 1933, and again from 1938 to 1947. Early life and family Born in Dunedin on 17 November 1884, Thomson was the son of William Thomson and Elizabeth Sarah Thomson (née Halliwell). He received his secondary education in Dunedin and Sydney. Thomson moved to Hāwera in 1900 to work as a clerk with his uncle, Herbert Theodore Halliwell, a lawyer. From 1950 to 1910, he was a clerk at Adams Brothers law firm in Dunedin, before entering legal practice himself in Stratford in 1910 under the firm of Halliwell and Thomson. Charles Stuart Curtis (15 December 1850 – 4 April 1923) was a storekeeper and local politician in Taranaki, New Zealand, and played a leading role in the development of the town of Stratford. Biography Family background Charles Stuart Curtis was born to George Curtis and Eliza Curtis (née Newsham) in Omata, Taranaki, on 15 December 1850. His parents and siblings had emigrated to New Zealand from London earlier that same year. Arriving at Port Nicholson, his father had walked overland from Wellington to New Plymouth, and made preparations for his family, who arrived there on 7 February 1850.
