Steatocranus
''Steatocranus'' is a genus of small rheophilic cichlids mostly native to the Congo River Basin in DR Congo/Congo Brazzaville, although one species, ''Steatocranus irvinei, S. irvinei'', is restricted to the Volta River in Ghana and Burkino Faso, and it belongs in a separate genus. There are also at least 10 undescribed species in the Congo River basin awaiting scientific description. The fish in this genus all have relatively reduced swim bladder function. The name ''Steatocranus'' refers to the fatty deposit on the forehead of most species. Two species, ''Steatocranus casuarius, S. casuarius'' (also known as the lionhead or buffalohead cichlid) and ''Steatocranus tinanti, S. tinanti'' are relatively common in the aquarium trade. As for other cichlids brood care is highly developed and both sexes are involved in raising the young. All ''Steatocranus'' species are secretive cave spawners and form monogamy in animals, monogamous pairs for breeding. The female is more actively i ...

Congo River Basin
The Congo River, formerly also known as the Zaire River, is the second-longest river in Africa, shorter only than the Nile, as well as the third-largest river in the world list of rivers by discharge, by discharge volume, following the Amazon River, Amazon and Ganges rivers. It is the world's deepest recorded river, with measured depths of around . Cichlid
Cichlids () are a large, diverse, and widespread family of percomorph fish in the family Cichlidae, order Cichliformes. At least 1,760 species have been scientifically described, making it one of the largest vertebrate families, with only the Cyprinidae being more speciose. New species are discovered annually, and many species remain undescribed. The actual number of species is therefore unknown, with estimates varying between 2,000 and 3,000. They are native to the Neotropics, Africa (including Madagascar), the Middle East, and the Indian subcontinent, although some species have been introduced worldwide. Many cichlids, particularly tilapia, are important food fishes, while others, such as the '' Cichla'' species, are valued game fish. The family also includes many popular freshwater aquarium fish kept by hobbyists, including the angelfish, oscars, and discus. Cichlids have the largest number of endangered species among vertebrate families, most in the haplochrom ...
