James Cresap Sprigg
James Cresap Sprigg (1802 – October 3, 1852) was a United States representative from Kentucky. He was the brother of Michael Cresap Sprigg. He was born in Frostburg, Maryland in 1802 where he completed preparatory studies. Later, he moved to Shelbyville, Kentucky. He studied law and was admitted to the bar and practiced before holding several local offices. Sprigg was a member of the Kentucky House of Representatives 1830–1834 and 1837–1840. He elected as a Whig to the Twenty-seventh Congress (March 4, 1841 – March 3, 1843) but was an unsuccessful candidate as an Independent for reelection in 1842 to the Twenty-eighth Congress. After Congress, he resumed the practice of law and was again a member of the Kentucky House of Representatives in 1852. He served until his death in Shelbyville, Kentucky in 1852. John Gordon Sprigg
Sir John Gordon Sprigg, (27 April 1830 – 4 February 1913) was an English-born colonial administrator and politician who served as prime minister of the Cape Colony on four occasions. Early life Sprigg was born in Ipswich, England, into a strongly Puritan family. His father was a pastor and his strictly conservative up-bringing had a lifelong effect on Sprigg's values (until the end of his life, one of Sprigg's proudest claims was that his ancestor had been one of Oliver Cromwell's chaplains). He was educated at Ipswich School, as well as a series of other private schools. He started his career in a shipbuilder's office, and then switched jobs to become a short-hand writer and reporter. However, his fragile health caused him to emigrate to the Cape Colony in 1858 to recuperate, and here he decided to settle. He managed to acquire a free farm in what was known at the time as British Kaffraria (near what is today East London), and began to get involved in local politics. ... Joshua Sprigg
Joshua Sprigg or Sprigge (1618 in Banbury – 1684) was an English Independent theologian and preacher. He acted as chaplain to Sir Thomas Fairfax, general for the Parliamentarians, and wrote or co-wrote the 1647 book ''Anglia Rediviva'', a history of the part played up to that time by Fairfax's army in the Wars of the Three Kingdoms. He studied at New Inn Hall, Oxford, and took an M. A. at the University of Edinburgh. He then became a parish priest in London, at the church of St. Pancras, Soper Lane. He later was a Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford, imposed by Parliament after their victory. Michael Sprigg
Michael Cresap Sprigg (July 1, 1791 – December 18, 1845) was a U.S. Representative from Maryland, brother of James Cresap Sprigg. Born in Frostburg, Maryland, Sprigg completed preparatory studies. He held a number of local offices, and served as member of the Maryland House of Delegates in 1821, 1823, 1837, 1840, and 1844. He served as president of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Company in 1841 and 1842. Sprigg was elected as a Jacksonian to the Twentieth and Twenty-first Congresses, serving from March 4, 1827, to March 3, 1831. In Congress, he served as chairman of the Committee on Expenditures on Public Buildings (Twentieth and Twenty-first Congresses). Richard Keith Sprigg (31 March 1922 – 8 September 2011) was a British linguist who specialised in the phonology of Asian languages. Sprigg was educated under J. R. Firth and was a member of the first generation of professional British linguists. Also as a consequence Sprigg was an advocate of the prosodic phonological method of Firth. Sprigg worked on several Tibeto-Burman languages including Lepcha, and various Tibetan dialects. He taught for many years at the School of Oriental and African Studies, and retired to Kalimpong, West Bengal, India with his wife Ray, granddaughter of David Macdonald the author of ''The Land of the Lama'' and ''20 Years in Tibet'', until her death. Samuel Sprigg
Samuel Sprigg ( ca. 1783 – April 21, 1855) served as the 17th Governor of the state of Maryland in the United States from 1819 to 1822. Background Little is known of Sprigg's early life. He was possibly born in Washington County or Prince George's County, although conclusive proof has not been found. His father was Joseph Sprigg and was married several times. He was likely born to his father's third wife, Margaret Elzey Weems between 1781–1783. After his father's death in 1800, he was adopted by his uncle, Osborn Sprigg. He would eventually inherit Osborne's Prince George's County estate of Northampton. On January 1, 1811, Sprigg married Violetta Lansdale, daughter of Thomas Lancaster Lansdale and Cornelia Van Horne. Thomas Sprigg
Thomas Sprigg (1747 – December 13, 1809) was an 18th-century American politician. He represented the fourth district of Maryland in the United States House of Representatives from 1793 to 1797. Sprigg was born in Prince George's County, Maryland. He served during the American Revolutionary War as ensign in the Maryland Battalion of the Flying Camp from September to December 1776. He was appointed the first register of wills of Washington County, Maryland, in 1777, and served until September 29, 1780, when he resigned. He was a delegate to the Maryland State Convention of 1788, to vote whether Maryland should ratify the proposed Constitution of the United States. He was appointed lieutenant of Washington County by the governor and Council of Maryland on December 21, 1779. Sprigg Township is one of the fifteen townships of Adams County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,744 at the 2020 census.
