Spiez is a town and Municipalities of Switzerland, municipality on the shore of Lake Thun in the Bernese Oberland region of the Switzerland, Swiss canton of Bern. It is part of the Frutigen-Niedersimmental (administrative district), Frutigen-Niedersimmental administrative district. Besides the town of Spiez, the municipality also includes the settlements of Einigen, Hondrich, Faulensee, and Spiezwiler. The official language of Spiez is (the Swiss variety of Standard) Swiss Standard German, German, but the main spoken language is the local variant of the Alemannic German, Alemannic Swiss German (linguistics), Swiss German dialect. History Spiez is first mentioned around 761-62 as ''Spiets''. The area between the Kander (Switzerland), Kander and Lake Thun in modern Spiez was home to several large Bronze Age, Bronze and Iron Age settlements. Aeschi bei Spiez is a municipalities of Switzerland, municipality in the Frutigen-Niedersimmental (administrative district), Frutigen-Niedersimmental administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland. History Aeschi bei Spiez is first mentioned in 1228 as ''Asshes''. In 1269 it was mentioned as ''(villa) Esche.''. The earliest traces of settlements in the area include scattered La Tene culture, La Tene era graves and individual prehistoric tools. During the Middle Ages, it was part of the ''Herrschaft (territory), Herrschaft'' of Mülenen, under the Lords of Kien. The ''Herrschaft'' then passed through several other nobles, including the Wädenswil and Turn families. By the 13th century, Aeschi was the center of a large parish. Wimmis is a Municipalities of Switzerland, municipality in the Frutigen-Niedersimmental (administrative district), Frutigen-Niedersimmental administrative district in the Cantons of Switzerland, canton of Bern (canton), Bern in Switzerland. History Wimmis is first mentioned in 994 as ''Windemis''. The oldest traces of a settlement in Wimmis include the Mesolithic and Bronze Age settlements on the Chienberg and the Bronze Age and High Middle Ages settlements on the Pintel. Switzerland in the Roman era, Roman era artifacts were found at Engfeld and bronze statue of Emperor Gordian III was found at Tägerstein.
