''Sphodromantis'' is a large genus of praying mantises concentrated in Africa, sometimes considered a synonym of the genus ''Hierodula'': from the same family, Mantidae. Outside their range especially, many share the common name African Mantis. Sphodromantis Viridis
''Sphodromantis viridis'' is a species of praying mantis that is kept worldwide as a pet. Its common names include African mantis, giant African mantis, and bush mantis. Name ''Sphodromantis viridis'' is popularly called the African mantis, but that common name is shared with not only other species in its genus (i.e. '' S. belachowski'', '' S. centralis'', '' S. gastrica'', '' S. lineola'', etc.), but also '' Miomantis caffra'' and others, as well. Range ''Sphodromantis viridis'' is native to West Africa south of the Sahara Desert. It can also be found as an introduced species in areas outside its original range, including Israel and Spain. Description Despite its scientific name (' is Latin for green) this insect ranges in color from bright green to dull brown. Females can reach in length. Sexual dimorphism is typical of mantises; the male is much smaller. Females may also be distinguished from males as they have a six-segmented abdomen compared to an eight-segmented abdomen ...

Sphodromantis Gastrica
''Sphodromantis gastrica'', with the common names African mantis or common green mantis, is a species of praying mantis from Africa. It averages in body length, and has a very diverse diet, hunting any prey of reasonable size. It has a lifespan of approximately 332 days and usually females live longer than males. Their survival rate until adulthood is about 41.8%. Previously classified as ''Hierodula bicarinata'' (Saussure, 1869) and as ''Sphodromantis guttata'' (Giglio-Tos, 1907), this species has been found in South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Democratic Republic of Congo, and East Africa.
