Soleidae
The true soles are a family, Soleidae, of flatfishes. It includes saltwater and brackish water species in the East Atlantic, Indian Ocean, West and Central Pacific Ocean, and the mediterranean sea. Freshwater species are found in Africa, southern Asia, New Guinea, and Australia. In the past, soles of the Americas (both fresh and salt water) were included in this family, but they have been separated to their own family, the American soles (Achiridae). The only true sole remaining in that region is '' Aseraggodes herrei'' of the Galápagos and Cocos Island. The true soles are bottom-dwelling fishes feeding on small crustaceans and other invertebrates. The family contains 30 genera and a total of about 180 species. Soles begin life as bilaterally symmetric larvae, with an eye on each side of the head, but during development, the left eye moves around onto the right side of the head. Adult soles lie on their left (blind) sides on the sea floor, often covered in mud, which in com ...

Buglossidium
The solenette or yellow sole, ''Buglossidium luteum'', is a species of flatfish in the family Soleidae, and the only member of its genus. It is characterized by its small size, low-slung semi-circular mouth, and regularly placed dark fin rays. A common and widespread species, it is native to sandy bottoms in the northeastern Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. It is of little commercial value. Distribution and habitat The solenette occurs in the northeastern Atlantic Ocean from Iceland and Scotland southward, as well as in the North Sea, Kattegat and the Baltic Sea. It also occurs in the Mediterranean Sea, including the Adriatic Sea, the Sea of Marmara, and the Bosphorus. It has been reported from a range of , but is rare in very shallow waters. The highest abundances occur at depths of in the English Channel and at in the Bay of Biscay. Their distribution is not restricted by sediment type as in some other flatfish species. In the Solway Firth, there is a general movem ...

Synaptura
''Synaptura'' is a genus of soles. Most species are found in salt and brackish water in the Indo-Pacific and tropical East Atlantic, but ''S. salinarum'' is restricted to fresh water in Australia. The largest species in the genus reaches a length of . Paul Chabanaud retained the genus named ''Synaptura'' for this group and he designated ''Pleuronectes commersonnii'' as its type species. This designation is incorrect according to the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature and ''Synaptura'' as designated by Theodore Edward Cantor is a synonym of '' Brachirus''. Due to this some workers have assigned the species previously assigned to ''Synaptura'', as raised by Chabanaud to '' Dagetichthys'', a previously monotypic genus which contained just '' Dagetichthys lakdoensis''. This more broadly defined ''Dagetichthys'' for a monophyletic clade In biology, a clade (), also known as a Monophyly, monophyletic group or natural group, is a group of organisms that is composed ...

Dexillus
The tufted sole (''Dexillus muelleri'') is a species of flatfish from the family of true soles Soleidae. It is the only species in the monotypic genus ''Dexillus''. It is found in the Indian and western Pacific Oceans. The tufted sole is found over seabeds which consist of sand, mud, gravel, and sea grass bottoms on the inner continental shelf, they are frequently recorded as coming into bays and the mouths of estuaries. They feed on a variety of benthic invertebrates and the maximum recorded standard length for this species is 221mm. This species has been recorded from India and Sri Lanka, east through the Malay Archipelago and northern Australia to Tonga, Fiji and American Samoa American Samoa is an Territories of the United States, unincorporated and unorganized territory of the United States located in the Polynesia region of the Pacific Ocean, South Pacific Ocean. Sand Sole
The sand sole (''Pegusa lascaris'') is a fish species in the family Soleidae. It is a marine, subtropical, demersal fish up to long. Widespread in the northeastern and southeastern Atlantic Ocean, Atlantic, to the Gulf of Guinea in the south, also in the Mediterranean Sea. Recorded in the Suez Canal. During a long time the soles from the Black Sea and Sea of Azov were erroneously identified as the Blackhand sole, which was considered as subspecies ''P. l. nasuta'' (now as a different species). The modern studies confirms the presence of the sand sole in this water basin.Movchan V.V. (2011) Fish of Ukraine, Zoloti Vorota, Kyiv, 444 pp. . References External links

Adults of the best-known species, ''S. macleayanus'' live at moderate depths in the ocean, but migrate towards estuaries to spawn in the spring and summer. The young make their way up the estuary and river, only to return to the sea when they grow older. Less is known about ''S. hogani'', only described in 2008, but it appears to be restricted to the Daintree River. Species There are currently two recognized species in this genus: * '' Synclidopus hogani'' J. W. Johnson & J. E. Randall, 2008 * '' Synclidopus macleayanus'' ( E. P. The body is pale brown. It is covered in large round blotches that are joined by smaller blotches. These form circles with white centers. This pattern extends onto the dorsal and anal fins. The caudal and pectoral fins are small.
