Slovakia–Ukraine Relations
Slovakia–Ukraine relations are the foreign relations between Slovakia and Ukraine. Both countries established diplomatic relations on January 1, 1993. Slovakia has an embassy in Kyiv, a general consulate in Uzhhorod, and two honorary consulates (in Donetsk and Uzhhorod). Ukraine has an embassy in Bratislava and a general consulate in Prešov. The countries share 97 km of common border. There are between 40,000 and 100,000 people of Ukrainian descent living in Slovakia. Slovakia is a European Union member and Ukraine is a European Union candidate. Both countries are full members of the Council of Europe. History During the Interwar era the Ukrainian oblast Zakarpattia was part of Czechoslovakia, before being ceded to Hungary. Zakarpattia Oblast
Zakarpattia Oblast (Ukrainian language, Ukrainian: Закарпатська область), also referred to as simply Zakarpattia (Ukrainian language, Ukrainian: Закарпаття; Hungarian language, Hungarian: ''Kárpátalja'') or Transcarpathia in English, is an Administrative divisions of Ukraine, oblast located in the Carpathian Mountains in west Ukraine, mostly coterminous with the historical region of Carpathian Ruthenia. Denys Shmyhal
Denys Anatoliiovych Shmyhal (, ; born 15 October 1975) is a Ukrainian politician and entrepreneur who has served as the 18th and current prime minister of Ukraine since 2020. Before his appointment as prime minister, Shmyhal was the governor of Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast and an acting vice prime minister in the Honcharuk Government. As Prime Minister, Shmyhal has been in charge of handling the response to the COVID-19 pandemic in Ukraine and conducting the defense of Ukraine during the 2022 Russian invasion. The prime minister of Ukraine (, , ) is the head of government of Ukraine. The prime minister presides over the government of Ukraine, Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, which is the highest body of the executive branch of the government of Ukraine, Ukrainian government. Uzhhorod Airport
Uzhhorod International Airport, (; ) is an international airport located in the city of Uzhhorod, in the western Ukrainian province of Zakarpattia. The airport is situated in the westernmost part of the city, in the Chervenytsia district at 145, Sobranetska Street. It is a small airport, serving Uzhhorod and the whole oblast. The airport's runway begins 90 meters from the Ukrainian-Slovak international border, so planes must use Slovak airspace for some take-offs and landings under special treaty. History The airport was not operational from 2016 (except for several months in 2019 when Motor Sich Airlines tried to operate flights) until June 2021. At the end of 2018, the airport received a certificate from the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). On 15 March 2019, the airport resumed servicing regular flights. Michal Kováč
Michal Kováč (3 August 1930 – 5 October 2016) was the first president of Slovakia, having served from 1993 through 1998. Early life Kováč was born in the village of Ľubiša in then Czechoslovakia in 1929. He then graduated from the present-day University of Economics in Bratislava and was a bank employee of the Státní banka československá and of other banks. As such, he spent some years in London and in Cuba in the 1960s. During Normalization he was subjected to some persecution. Political career During and after the Velvet Revolution, from 12 December 1989 to 17 May 1991 (when he resigned) Kováč was the Finance Minister of the Slovak (Socialist) Republic.
