Seychelles (, ; ), officially the Republic of Seychelles (; Seychellois Creole: ), is an island country and archipelagic state consisting of 155 islands (as per the Constitution) in the Indian Ocean. Victoria is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Seychelles, situated on the north-eastern side of Mahé, Seychelles, Mahé, the archipelago's main island. The city was first established as the seat of the British Empire, British colonial government. The National Assembly in its current constellation formed following 2020 Seychellois general election, elections held on 22–24 October 2020, with a total of 35 members. The current Speaker of the National Assembly is Roger Mancienne, in office since 28 October 2020. Wavel Ramkalawan
Wavel Ramkalawan (born 15 March 1961) is a Seychellois politician and Anglican priest who has been serving as the President of Seychelles since 26 October 2020. Ramkalawan was an opposition MP from 1993 to 2011 and 2016 to 2020. He also served as the Leader of the Opposition from 1998 to 2011 and 2016 to 2020. On 25 October 2020, Ramkalawan won the presidential election, the country's first such victory for an opposition candidate since independence, marking its first successful peaceful transition of power. The rupee is the currency of the Seychelles. It is subdivided into 100 ''cents''. In the local Seychellois Creole (Seselwa) language, it is called the ''roupi''. The ISO code is SCR. Hinduism in Seychelles is the second-largest religion after Christianity, with more than 5.4% of the population. Seychellois Creole (), also known as Kreol, Seselwa Creole French, and Seselwa Creole is the French-based creole language spoken by the Seychellois Creole people, Seychelles Creole people of the Seychelles. It is one of the national language, national languages of the Seychelles. History The Seychelles were first settled in 1770, by French settlers from the island of Mauritius. The islands population was mostly made up of slaves with a few whites and free Negro, free blacks. Over time the Mauritian creole that was spoken by the slave population diverged enough from Mauritian Creole to be considered its own creole separate from Mauritian Creole. Ahmed Afif (born 6 January 1967) is a Maldivian-Seychellois politician and banker who has served as the Vice President of Seychelles since 27 October 2020. Biography Ahmed Afif was born in Mahé in the Seychelles as the son Abdulla Afif and Aneesa Ali. He is of Maldivian descent; his father was the President of the United Suvadive Republic from 1959 to 1963. Afif graduated from Warwick University in Maths, Operational Research, Statistics and Economics. He had served as chairman of NouvoBanq Seychelles and Seychelles Savings Bank. He was first elected to the National Assembly in 2006 for the Anse Etoile Constituency. In 2015, he joined the Seychellois Alliance as the running mate of Patrick Pillay in the 2015 presidential election. Islam In Seychelles
Islam in the Indian Ocean was established by Muslims, Muslim sea merchants well before the European discovery of Seychelles. However, unlike in other island countries such as the Comoros or the Maldives, there were no permanent inhabitants in Seychelles until the French settlement in 1770. Today, the Muslim population of the islands is reported to be approximately 1.1%, roughly 900 people. Many of its island neighbours in the southern Indian Ocean, including the Comoros, Maldives, and Zanzibar, have a much larger Muslim influence because of their settlement by Muslims before European colonization.
