Saskatchewan Legislature
The Saskatchewan Legislature is made of two elements: the lieutenant governor as representative of the King of Canada, and the unicameral assembly called the Legislative Assembly. The legislature has existed since Saskatchewan was formed out of part of the North-West Territories in 1905. Like the Canadian federal government, Saskatchewan uses a Westminster-style parliamentary government, in which members are sent to the Legislative Assembly after general elections and from there the party with the most seats chooses a premier and Executive Council. William Melville Martin
William Melville Martin (August 23, 1876 – June 22, 1970) served as the second premier of Saskatchewan from 1916 to 1922. In 1916, although not a member of the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan, Martin was elected leader of the Saskatchewan Liberal Party, succeeding Premier Walter Scott and thus became Premier of Saskatchewan. Prior to entering provincial politics, Martin had been a member of the federal Parliament for two terms, as a member of the Liberal Party of Canada. On his retirement from politics, he was appointed to the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal, serving first as a puisne justice and then as Chief Justice of Saskatchewan. Early life Martin was born in Norwich, Ontario. In 1898, he earned an honours degree in Classics from the University of Toronto, and then a Teacher Certificate from the Ontario School of Pedagogy. 1912 Saskatchewan General Election
The 1912 Saskatchewan general election was held on July 11, 1912 to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan. Premier Walter Scott led the Liberal Party of Saskatchewan to a third term in office with a significant increase in the share of the popular vote. The opposition, now renamed from the Provincial Rights Party to the Conservative Party of Saskatchewan and led by Wellington Bartley Willoughby, lost both votes and seats in the legislature. William Charles Sutherland
William Charles Sutherland (June 7, 1865 – March 2, 1940) was the second Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan (1908–1912), i.e., the presiding officer of the legislature. Sutherland was a Liberal Member of the Legislative Assembly who was first elected in the first general election on December 13, 1905, to the first legislature of the newly formed Province of Saskatchewan. Sutherland represented the electoral district of Saskatoon, and served with Premier Walter Scott. He was re-elected in the 1908 and 1912 elections to represent Saskatoon County. On May 23, 1906, Sutherland introduced a resolution to move the capital of the province from Regina to Saskatoon, but the motion was defeated by a vote of 21–2 in the legislature. Thomas MacNutt
Thomas MacNutt (August 3, 1850 – February 5, 1927) was a Canadian politician who held national as well as province-wide office, as a former member of the House of Commons of Canada and the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan. He won a number of significant recognized awards and honours in his career. Thomas MacNutt was one of the original eight people who comprised the Independent party, the precursor to the Progressive Party of Canada. Early life and family MacNutt was born in Eastern Canada in Campbellton, New Brunswick, on August 3, 1850, to Charles Stewart MacNutt and Emily Allison (née Sims) MacNutt. Thomas MacNutt attended elementary school on Prince Edward Island, and thereafter attended Ottawa grammar school and commercial college. Provincial Rights Party
The Progressive Conservative Party of Saskatchewan is a conservative political party in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. Founded in 1905 by former Northwest Territories Premier Frederick Haultain, the party was first known as the Provincial Rights Party. In 1912, its name changed to the Conservative Party of Saskatchewan, and in 1942 it adopted its current name. Members are commonly known as Tories. The party has formed government in Saskatchewan three times, first in a coalition government from 1929 to 1934, and then in consecutive majority governments from 1982 to 1991. The party was badly damaged by an expense fraud scandal in the 1990s. In 1997, the party went dormant when much of its membership migrated to the newly established Saskatchewan Party. Thomas Walter Scott
Thomas Walter Scott (October 27, 1867 – March 23, 1938) was the first premier of Saskatchewan from 1905 to 1916. Scott was Saskatchewan's second longest-serving Premier, serving one continuous term from 1905 to 1916).
