Sambhal (pronounced Help:IPA/Hindi and Urdu, sə̃bʰəl) is a city located in the Sambhal district of Uttar Pradesh, India. The city lies approximately 158 km (98 mi) east of New Delhi and 355 km (220 mi) north-west of the state capital Lucknow. It also falls within the Rohilkhand region in the Moradabad division of the state, being approximately 32 km (20 miles) from the city of Moradabad. Sambhal District
Sambhal district, previously called as Bhimnagar district is a district of Uttar Pradesh state in India. The district headquarter is Bahjoi town. A large of 993 villages with 16 police stations fall under Sambhal district. History The district was announced on 28 September 2011 and created by the state government out of Moradabad district on 23 July 2012 as one of three new districts in the state. At the time of its creation, the state government decided to name the new district "Bhimnagar" in honour of the social reformer, Bhimrao Ambedkar. However, massive protests broke out in Sambhal town and the adjoining rural areas against the move to rename to the ancient town. Sambhal had been known by the same name for over 500 years, had been an important town in medieval India, and had never had any connection with Bhimrao Ambedkar, a Dalit icon. Shahi Jama Masjid
The Shahi Jama Masjid () is a Congregational mosque, Friday mosque located in Sambhal, in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. Established during the reign of Babur in December 1526, it is the oldest surviving Mughal Empire, Mughal-era mosque in South Asia. The mosque is a protected monument under the Ancient Monuments Preservation Act 1904, Ancient Monuments Protection Act, 1904. Establishment According to an extant inscription on the ''mihrab'', the mosque was constructed by a general of emperor Babur, Mir Hindu Beg, by 6 December 1526, following orders of Babur. Thus the mosque was finished seven months after the First Battle of Panipat, Battle of Panipat in which Babur conquered Delhi from Ibrahim Lodi. Both Ram Nath and Catherine Asher, scholars of Mughal architecture, doubt that Babur had any personal involvement.
