Runcorn
Runcorn is an industrial town and Runcorn Docks, cargo port in the Borough of Halton, Cheshire, England. Runcorn is on the south bank of the River Mersey, where the estuary narrows to form the Runcorn Gap. It is upstream from the port of Liverpool. The Runcorn built-up area had a population of 61,145 at the 2021 United Kingdom census, 2021 census. Runcorn was founded by Æthelflæd, Æthelflæd of Mercia in 915 AD as a fortification to guard against Viking invasion at a narrowing of the River Mersey. Under Norman rule, Runcorn fell under the Halton (barony), Barony of Halton, and an Augustinians, Augustinian abbey was established there in 1115. Runcorn Docks, originally the Bridgewater Docks, is an inland port on the Manchester Ship Canal in the town of Runcorn, Cheshire, England. It is operated by The Peel Group, Peel Ports and handles bulk and project cargo. History Early development It is possible that a small Roman Empire, Roman port existed on the River Mersey at Runcorn. But the development of a port of any significance did not start until the Bridgewater Canal was extended to Runcorn in 1776. A line of ten Lock (water transport), locks was built from 1771–1773 to connect the Runcorn basin of the canal at 21.3m Ordnance datum, AOD with the River Mersey at 3.7m AOD.
