Rowohlt Verlag
Rowohlt Verlag is a German publishing house based in Hamburg, with offices in Reinbek and Berlin. It has been part of the Georg von Holtzbrinck Group since 1982. The company has been dissolved and restarted twice since its creation in 1908. History Rowohlt Verlag was founded in 1908 in Leipzig by Ernst Rowohlt and was renamed to Kurt Wolff Verlag in February 1913. After Ernst Rowohlt was banned from the publishing industry in 1938, the company became a subsidiary of Deutsche Verlags-Anstalt, until it was closed in 1943. On 9 November 1945, Rowohlt's oldest son, Heinrich Maria Ledig, relaunched the publishing house in Stuttgart. Ernst Rowohlt
Ernst Hermann Heinrich Rowohlt (23 June 1887 in Bremen – 1 December 1960 in Hamburg) was a German publisher who founded the Rowohlt publishing house in 1908 and headed it in its repeated incarnations until his death. In 1912, he married actress Emmy Reye, but the marriage only lasted a short while. In 1921 he married Hilda Pangust and in 1957 he married Maria Pierenkämper. Rowohlt had two sons, both illegitimate: Heinrich Maria Ledig-Rowohlt (1908–1992), who succeeded him as head of the publishing house, and Harry Rowohlt (1945–2015), a writer. He also had one daughter. As a publisher, he specialized in works by American authors including Ernest Hemingway and William Faulkner. With the rise of the Nazis he switched to safer non-fiction and travel works, and in 1937 joined the Nazi party. Harry Rowohlt
Harry Rowohlt (27 March 1945 – 15 June 2015) was a German writer and translator. He also played the role of a derelict in the famous German weekly-soap Lindenstraße. Background Born Harry Rupp in Hamburg, Rowohlt was the son of publisher Ernst Rowohlt and actress Maria Rowohlt; his parents married in 1957. Rowohlt is known for his insightful and humorous translation of Milne's Winnie-the-Pooh.
