Romo
Romantic Modernism, more commonly known as Romo, was a musical and nightclubbing movement, of glam/style pop lineage, in the UK circa 1995–1997, centred on the twin homes of Camden-based clubnight Club Skinny and its West End clone Arcadia, as well as concerts by the chief associated bands. The Romo movement was essentially a derivation of late-1970s disco and early-1980s club music, with an emphasis on the extroverted sartorial style and decadent air of New Romantic-era bands such as Japan and Soft Cell. Nonetheless, contemporary features in ''Melody Maker'' (where the genre was championed mainly by Simon Price and Taylor Parkes – it was dismissed by the rival ''NME'') tended to downplay the nostalgic connection with New Romantic, emphasising Romo's innovation and contemporary relevance. Simon Price
Simon Price (born 25 September 1967) is a British music journalist and author. He is known for his weekly review section in ''The Independent on Sunday'' and his books ''Everything (A Book About Manic Street Preachers)'' and ''Curepedia: An A-Z of the Cure''. Career Writer Price began his career on the ''Barry & District News'', where he wrote a music column from 1984 to 1986. In the 1990s, Price was a staff writer for ''Melody Maker'' for nine years. From 2000 to 2013, Price wrote weekly music reviews in ''The Independent on Sunday'' newspaper. ''Everything'', a biography of Manic Street Preachers, was claimed by Caroline Sullivan in ''The Guardian'' in 1999 to be the "fastest-selling rock book of all time". It was later listed by ''The Guardian'' in a Top Ten of books about rock. New Romantic
New Romantic was an underground subculture movement that originated in the United Kingdom in the late 1970s. The movement emerged from the nightclub scene in London and Birmingham at venues such as Billy's and The Blitz. The New Romantic movement was characterised by flamboyant, eccentric fashion inspired by fashion boutiques such as Kahn and Bell in Birmingham and PX in London. Early adherents of the movement were often referred to by the press by such names as Blitz Kids, New Dandies and Romantic Rebels. Influenced by David Bowie, Marc Bolan and Roxy Music, the New Romantics developed fashions inspired by the glam rock era coupled with the early Romantic period of the late 18th and early 19th century (from which the movement took its name). Toby Slater
Tobias Lewis Slater (14 August 1979 – 13 December 2021) was an English singer-songwriter and musician, best known as the lead singer for the 1990s indie pop band Catch, who released two singles in the UK and an album in Indonesia. Slater also recorded and released music as a solo artist and with the band Kunta Kinte, who were renamed Tough Love. Career 1995–1999: Catch Catch were descended from Brattish, Slater's first band, formed in 1994/95, which also included Ben Etchells. Brattish rehearsed the Catch material extensively, paid for by interested A&R men, but never gigged. This period is briefly mentioned in John Niven's satirical book "Kill Your Friends". Taylor Parkes
Taylor Parkes (born 30 April 1972) is a British journalist. He is best known for his music journalism which appeared in ''Melody Maker'' from 1993 to 1998. Parkes was a champion of Saint Etienne, Pulp, Manic Street Preachers and the Romo scene, something he supported along with colleague Simon Price. He was critical of Britpop groups that he considered to be unadventurous but was for a time largely positive towards Oasis. He also contributed to '' Careless Talk Costs Lives'' and '' Plan B'', both edited by his former ''Melody Maker'' colleague Everett True, as well as 1990s pop-cultural magazine ''Ikon'' and early 2000s music monthly ''Bang''. He has since written for the football magazine '' When Saturday Comes'' and ''The Quietus'', a music and pop culture website, and has contributed to ''Jarvis Cocker's Sunday Service'' on BBC Radio 6 Music. Hi-NRG
Hi-NRG (pronounced "high energy") is a genre of uptempo disco or electronic dance music (EDM) that originated during the late 1970s and early 1980s. As a music genre, typified by its fast tempo, staccato hi-hat rhythms (and the four-on-the-floor pattern), reverberated "intense" vocals and "pulsating" octave basslines, it was particularly influential on the disco scene. Characteristics Whether hi-NRG is more rock-oriented than standard disco music is a matter of opinion. Hi-NRG can be heavily synthesized but it is not a prerequisite, and whether it is devoid of "funkiness" is, again, in the ear of the beholder. Certainly, many artists perform their vocals in R&B and soul styles on hi-NRG tracks. The genre's tempo ranges between 120 and 140 beats per minute.
