Rochester is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 5,717 at the 2020 census. Rochester is a part of the South Coast (Massachusetts), South Coast region of Massachusetts which encompasses the cities and towns that surround Buzzards Bay (excluding the Elizabeth Islands, Bourne, Massachusetts, Bourne and Falmouth, Massachusetts, Falmouth), Mount Hope Bay and the Sakonnet River. History Rochester was settled in 1679 on the lands called "Sippican" by the local Wampanoags, along the coast of Buzzards Bay. (''Sippican'' was the name of the local tribe.) It originally included the lands of Mattapoisett, Massachusetts, Mattapoisett, Marion, Massachusetts, Marion and parts of Wareham, Massachusetts, Wareham (which was lost when Wareham was founded in 1739).
