Rickmansworth () is a town in south-west Hertfordshire, England, located approximately north-west of central London, south-west of Watford and inside the perimeter of the M25 motorway. The town is mainly to the north of the Grand Union Canal (formerly the Grand Junction Canal) and the River Colne, Hertfordshire, River Colne. Rickmansworth is the administrative seat of the Three Rivers District Council; the confluence of the River Chess and the River Gade with the Colne in Rickmansworth inspired the district's name. The enlarged Colne flows south to form a major tributary of the River Thames. The town is served by the Metropolitan line of the London Underground and by Chiltern Railways of the National Rail network, between London Marylebone railway station, London Marylebone and Aylesbury railway station, Aylesbury. Three Rivers is a Non-metropolitan district, local government district in south-west Hertfordshire, England. Its council is based in Rickmansworth. The district borders Hertsmere, Watford, St Albans City and District, St Albans, Dacorum, Buckinghamshire Council, Buckinghamshire, and the London boroughs of London Borough of Hillingdon, Hillingdon and London Borough of Harrow, Harrow. History Three Rivers District was created on 1 April 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972, covering the whole area of two former districts and most of a third, which were all abolished at the same time: *Chorleywood Urban district (England and Wales), Urban District *Rickmansworth Urban District *Watford Rural District, except the parish of Aldenham, which went to Hertsmere, and the part within the designated area of Hemel Hempstead New Towns in the United Kingdom, New Town, which went to Dacorum.
