Radøy is a List of former municipalities of Norway, former municipality in the Nordhordland district of the old Hordaland county, Norway. The municipality existed from 1964 until its dissolution in 2020 when it was merged into the new municipality of Alver (municipality), Alver in Vestland county. The municipality included almost all of the island of Radøy (island), Radøy plus many small surrounding islands. The administrative centre of the municipality was the village of Manger, Norway, Manger. Sletta, Hordaland
Sletta is a rural linear village in the municipality of Alver in Vestland county, Norway. The village lies on the northern side of the island of Radøy about a 50-minute drive north of the city of Bergen. There are about 400 inhabitants in the Sletta area. It is the site of the Emigrant Church, Sletta. Geography The green island of Radøy is an elongated island with parallel fjords and valleys, which were created during the Devonian period. Sletta is not an exception, and has flower fields and the flat and steep landscape is excellent for sheep. The area is rich on spruce (especially sitka spruce), pine, and rowan. History As Radøy was historically divided amongst several municipalities, Sletta was a part of Lindås municipality until 1964. Manger is a former municipality in the old Hordaland county, Norway. The municipality existed from 1838 until its dissolution in 1964. It was located in what is now Alver Municipality in Vestland county. Upon its dissolution in 1964, Manger encompassed . The municipality originally included almost all of the island of Radøy, the northern part of the island of Holsnøy, and all the islands of northern Øygarden. Radøy is an island in Vestland county, Norway. It is located east of Fedjefjorden in Alver Municipality. The island has an area of . The highest point of the island is the tall ''Morkefjellet''. The island lies in the Nordhordland region of the county. The Hjeltefjorden and Radfjorden flow along the western coast and the Lurefjorden and Radsundet flow along the eastern coast. This is a list of former municipalities of Norway, i.e. municipalities that no longer exist. When the local council system was introduced in Norway in 1837-38, the country had 392 municipalities. By 1958, the number had grown to a total of 744 rural municipalities, 64 city municipalities as well as a small number of small seaports with '' ladested'' status. A committee led by Nikolai Schei, formed in 1946 to examine the situation, proposed hundreds of mergers to reduce the number of municipalities and improve the quality of local administration. Most of the mergers were carried out, albeit to significant popular protest. By 1966, most of the mergers had been carried out and there were only 470 municipalities remaining.
