Psychotria
''Psychotria'' is a large genus of flowering plants in the coffee family Rubiaceae, with over 1,600 species. The genus has a pantropical distribution and members of the genus are small understorey trees in tropical forests. Some species are endangered or facing extinction due to deforestation, especially species of central Africa and the Pacific. Many species, including ''Psychotria viridis'', produce the Psychedelic drug, psychedelic chemical dimethyltryptamine (DMT). Rubiaceae () is a family (biology), family of flowering plants, commonly known as the coffee, madder, or bedstraw family. It consists of terrestrial trees, shrubs, lianas, or herbs that are recognizable by simple, opposite leaves with Petiole (botany), interpetiolar stipules and sympetalous actinomorphic flowers. The family contains about 14,100 species in about 580 genera, which makes it the fourth-largest angiosperm family. ''Psychotria carthagenensis'', also known as amyruca, is a South American rainforest understory shrub from the coffee family, Rubiaceae. It grows from the tropics of South America to Mexico. The plant is used in the preparation of the ayahuasca decoction. Pharmacological studies A study in 1972 based in gas chromatography–mass spectrometry method determined the presence of the alkaloids N,N-Dimethyltryptamine (DMT), N-monomethyltryptamine (MMT) and 2-methyl-1,2,3,4-Tetrahydro-β-carboline (MTHC) in the leaves. In a study in 1994 on ethanol extracts of the leaves showed negative results for the presence of alkaloids.
