Ponta Delgada S.C.
Ponta Delgada Soccer Club, also referred to as Fall River Ponta Delgada, was a United States soccer club, based in Fall River, Massachusetts. The club was formed by members of the city’s Portuguese community and shared its name with Ponta Delgada, the largest city of the Azores, an autonomous region of Portugal. During the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s they were one of the most successful amateur teams in the United States, winning the National Amateur Cup six times. In 1947 they won the first-ever National Challenge Cup / National Amateur Cup double. The same year their entire squad was selected en masse to represent the United States at the inaugural North American soccer championship. The Cuba national football team () represents Cuba in men's international football, and is controlled by the Asociación de Fútbol de Cuba (), which is a member of FIFA since 1932 and was a founding member of CONCACAF since 1961. It was also affiliated with NAFC (1946–1955) and later with CCCF (1955–1961), which was the two predecessor confederations of CONCACAF. It was also a member of PFC, the attempt at a unified confederation of the Americas. Nicknamed ''Los Leones del Caribe'' (). Gremio Lusitano is an amateur soccer team from Ludlow, Massachusetts. Founded in 1922 in a garage on Franklin Street, the team had competed for several seasons during the 1930s in the New England Division of the American Soccer League, but for most of its existence it has been an amateur or semi-professional club. John Palhete was the team's first coach and they play their home games in Lusitano Stadium, which is owned by the club. A hat-trick or hat trick is the achievement of a generally positive feat three times in a match, or another achievement based on the number three. Origin The term first appeared in 1858 in cricket, to describe H. H. Stephenson taking three Wicket#Dismissing a batsman, wickets with three consecutive delivery (cricket), deliveries. Fans held a collection for Stephenson, and presented him with a hat bought with the proceeds. The term was used in print for the first time in 1865 in the Essex Chronicle, ''Chelmsford Chronicle''. Pittsburgh Harmarville
The Harmarville Hurricanes were an amateur soccer club from Harmarville, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Pittsburgh, that twice won the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, known then as the National Challenge Cup, in 1952 and 1956. They also played in the Cup Final in 1953. The team was owned by the Harmar Coal Company. Many of the players worked in the coal industry in addition to playing for the Hurricanes. The Hurricanes beat the American Soccer League's Philadelphia Nationals 7–5 in the 1952 cup final with the winning goal scored by Sonny Yakopec. The 1956 Final saw the Hurricanes win 3–2 on aggregate score after a comeback from a two-goal deficit. They lost the first leg on the road 1–0 and conceded the first goal in the return home leg. Ed Valentine is a former U.S. soccer player who played with the amateur Fall River, Massachusetts-based club Ponta Delgada S.C. in the mid to late 1940s. Ponta Delgado was runner up in the 1946 National Challenge Cup. The next year, the team won the National Challenge Cup and the National Amateur Cup. This led to the United States Soccer Federation selecting Ponta Delgado to represent the U.S. in the 1947 NAFC Championship. In 1947, the then recently founded North American Football Confederation held its first regional championship, known as the NAFC Championship. Joseph Ferreira (December15, 1916June10, 2007) was a U.S. soccer player. He earned three caps with the U.S. national team between 1947 and 1948. He was born and died in Fall River, Massachusetts. Club career Ferreira began his career with Ponta Delgada S.C., an amateur Fall River soccer club.
