Pomona, Río Negro
Pomona is a small village on the Choele Choel Island in the Avellaneda Department, Río Negro, Avellaneda Department in the Río Negro Province, in Argentina. It was already a crossing point for the Río Negro (Argentina), Negro River to the island in 1890, when it was known as ''Paso Peñalva'', on the way to Choele Choel. It was formally founded in 1933 and named after the goddess Pomona (mythology), Pomona, because of its gardens. Provincial Primary School #7 is located there, containing an agrotechnic school and a municipal library. In the Pomona area, there are farms that cultivate mainly pears and apples, but also peaches and trees for wood. Its closest city is Lamarque, Río Negro, Lamarque, to which is connected by the National Route 250 (Argentina), National Route 250. ''Pomona'' is a play by Alistair McDowall that was commissioned for The Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama in 2014 and performed at The Gate Theatre in London as part of the NEW festival of plays. It then went on to the Orange Tree Theatre in Richmond, South West London, in November 2014. The play centres on Ollie who is searching for her missing sister in Manchester. In desperation, she finds all roads lead to Pomona, an abandoned concrete island at the heart of the city. Here at the centre of everything, journeys end and nightmares are born. The production was directed by Ned Bennett, designed by Georgia Lowe, lighting by Elliot Griggs and sound by Giles Thomas. It was a critical success and featured in Lyn Gardner's Top 10 Theatre of 2014. The production transferred to the National Theatre and the Royal Exchange Theatre in Autumn 2015. ''Der Sieg der fruchtbaren Pomona'' (The Victory of Fruitful Pomona) is a German-language opera by Reinhard Keiser to a libretto by Christian Heinrich Postel which premiered at the Hamburg Opera on 19 October 1702, for the birthday of Frederick IV of Denmark. The plot was based on the legend of Pomona (mythology), Pomona and Jupiter (mythology), Jupiter, and the libretto was the last of a series which the elderly poet Postel had provided to the young Keiser during the five previous opera seasons. The opera was the first of four Keiser operas dedicated to the Danish crown. Pomona (mythology)
Pomona (, ) was a goddess of fruitful abundance and plenty in ancient Roman religion and myth. Her name comes from the Latin word ''pomum'', "fruit", specifically orchard fruit. Pomona was said to be a wood nymph. Pomona does not have a clear counterpart in Greek mythology, although the fruit goddess Opora can be seen as her equivalent. Etymology The name ''Pōmōna'' is a derivation from Latin ''pōmus'' ('fruit-tree, fruit'), possibly stemming from Proto-Italic ''*po-e/omo'' ('taken off, picked?'), cognate with Umbrian Puemune, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European ''*h₁e/omo'' ('what is (to be) taken'). Mythology In the myth narrated by Ovid, she scorned the love of the woodland gods Silvanus and Picus, but married Vertumnus after he tricked her, disguised as an old woman. Pomona College ( ) is a private university, private Liberal arts colleges in the United States, liberal arts college in Claremont, California. It was established in 1887 by a group of Congregationalism in the United States, Congregationalists who wanted to recreate a "college of the New England type" in Southern California.
