Polyscias Fruticosa
''Polyscias fruticosa'', or Ming aralia, is a perennial plant, dicot evergreen shrub or dwarf tree. The plant grows fairly slowly but can reach up to 1–2 meters in height. The leaves are of a dark green pigment, glossy in texture, and are tripinnate and appear divided. Individual leaves vary from narrowly ovate to lanceolate and are about 10 cm long. Distribution Ming aralia is native to New Guinea, surrounding islands, and northeastern Australia, and grows primarily in the wet tropical biome. It has also been introduced into other countries in Southeast Asia, the Carribbean, and Mozambique. ''Polyscias elegans'', known as the celery wood, is a rainforest tree of eastern Australia. It occurs in a variety of different rainforest types, from fertile basaltic soils, to sand dunes and less fertile sedimentary soils. The range of natural distribution is from Jervis Bay (35° S) in southern New South Wales to Thursday Island (10° S), north of the Australian continent. Other common names include black pencil cedar and silver basswood. Taxonomy Elderberry panax was first described by Franz Sieber in 1830 as ''Panax sambucifolius''. It was given its current name in 1894 by German botanist Hermann Harms. ''Polyscias murrayi'', known as the pencil cedar, is a very common rainforest tree of eastern Australia. It occurs as a secondary regeneration species in disturbed rainforest areas, often on hillsides. The tree is identified by cylindrical trunk; abruptly forking into many branches, and supporting an impressive dark canopy.
