Pistonless Rotary Engine
A pistonless rotary engine is an internal combustion engine that does not use pistons in the way a reciprocating engine does. Designs vary widely but typically involve one or more wikt:rotor, rotors, sometimes called rotary pistons, as described in QT-Wankel: Two Concepts 100 Years Apart. Although many different designs have been constructed, only the Wankel engine has achieved widespread adoption. The term rotary combustion engine has been used as a name for these engines to distinguish them from early (generally up to the early 1920s) aircraft engines and motorcycle engines also known as ''rotary engines''. However, both continue to be called ''rotary engines'' and only the context determines which type is meant, whereas the "pistonless" prefix is less ambiguous. Hamilton Walker (New Zealand)
Hamilton Walker (10 November 1903 – 31 May 1990) was a Whangārei, New Zealand, engineer, inventor, and farmer who developed and patented a variety of rotary engine designs. He was the creator of New Zealand's first rotary engine. Background Walker was born 10 November 1903, the third son of James Thompson Walker and Annie Beatrice Douglas. He attended Whangarei Technical School. In 1925 Walker married Vera Sophia Lovett. He took up farming, and in the 1930s began experimenting with rotary engines. Walker died 31 May 1990. Rotary engines Between 1957 and 1977 Walker was a full-time inventor. A range extender is a fuel-based auxiliary power unit (APU) that extends the range of a battery electric vehicle by driving an electric generator that charges the vehicle's battery. The IRIS Engine is a design for a new type of internal combustion engine. Its inventors say that engines constructed using this design can be smaller, lighter and significantly more efficient than traditional engines of comparable horsepower and displacement. The design replaces the piston and cylinder architecture of conventional engines with a purportedly novel mechanism called the Internally Radiating Impulse Structure, or IRIS. A gerotor is a positive displacement pump. The name ''gerotor'' is derived from "generated rotor (turbine), rotor." A gerotor unit consists of an inner and an outer rotor. The inner rotor has ''n'' teeth, while the outer rotor has ''n'' + 1 teeth, with ''n'' defined as a natural number greater than or equal to 2. The axis of the inner rotor is offset from the axis of the outer rotor and both rotors rotate on their respective axes. A wave disk engine or wave disk generator is a type of pistonless rotary engine being developed at Michigan State University and Warsaw Institute of Technology. The engine has a spinning disk with curved blades. Once fuel and air enter the engine, the rotation of the disk creates shockwaves that compress the mixture. A swing-piston engine is a type of internal combustion engine in which the pistons move in a circular motion inside a ring-shaped "cylinder", moving closer and further from each other to provide compression and expansion. Sarich Orbital Engine
The Sarich orbital engine is a type of internal combustion engine, invented in 1972 by Ralph Sarich, an engineer from Perth, Australia, which features orbital rather than reciprocating motion of its central piston. It differs from the conceptually similar Wankel engine by using a generally prismatic shaped piston that orbits the axis of the engine, without rotation, rather than the rotating trilobular rotor of the Wankel.
