Shane Chen ( zh, ้ๆ; born 10 February 1956 in Beijing, China) is a Chinese-American inventor and entrepreneur based in Camas, Washington. He is best known for inventing the self-balancing hoverboard. Early life and education Chen grew up in Beijing, China and attended Beijing Agricultural University for a degree in agricultural meteorology. A difficult environment for starting and growing businesses in mid-1980s China led Chen to immigrate to America in search of better opportunities. Career and inventions In 1988 he founded CID, Inc. (now called CID Bio-Science), to develop scientific instruments for plant and agricultural research. Specific products in the field included photosynthesis meter, a leaf scanner and a plant canopy analyzer. Focus Designs
Focus Designs is an American based designer and distributor of self-balancing unicycles. It is known as the first company to build and release the first commercially available self-balancing unicycle. The company appeared in a 2012 episode of the Shark Tank where it was offered funding from the Sharks. History Focus Designs was incorporated in 2007 by Daniel Wood. He had been working at U.S. Digital in Vancouver, Washington and built a prototype that he rode in the parking lot of the company. After being laid off from the company, Wood decided to pursue the hobby of a self-balancing unicycle. Eunicycle
An electric unicycle (often initialized as EUC or acronymized yuke or Uni) is a self-balancing personal transporter with a single wheel. The rider controls speed by leaning forwards or backwards, and steers by twisting or tilting the unit side to side. The self-balancing mechanism uses accelerometers and gyroscopes. Most manufacturers of EUCs are based out of China, including Segway, Inmotion, Kingsong, Begode, and Leaperkim. Trevor Blackwell (born 4 November 1969, in Canada) is a Canadian-American computer programmer, engineer, entrepreneur and roboticist based in England. Blackwell is a developer of humanoid robots.
