The People's Artist of the Azerbaijan SSR () was an honorary title awarded from 1944 to 1990, it was granted to artists of the Azerbaijan SSR for contribution to the development of Azerbaijani culture in the fields of visual art and painting. It was modeled after the People's Artist of the USSR. This award was succeeded by the People's Artist of Azerbaijan title in 1990. The People's Artiste of the Azerbaijan SSR () was an honorary title awarded from 1931 to 1991 (and active from 1928 to 1991), it was granted to artistes of the Azerbaijan SSR for their contributions to the development of Azerbaijani culture in the fields of theater, cinema, music. This award was succeeded by the People's Artiste of Azerbaijan. History The first award was given to musician Gurban Pirimov in 1931. Kazim Kazimzade
Kazim Kazimzade (; 10 August 1913, Baku – 4 October 1992, Baku) was a Soviet and Azerbaijani painter. People's Artist of the Azerbaijan SSR, recipient of the Stalin Prize and the Order of the Red Banner of Labour. Biography Kazim Kazimzade was born on August 10, 1913, in Baku. Since school years, Kazimzade showed interest in the visual arts. In his formation as an artist, one of the main roles was played by his teacher, a famous graphic artist, an employee of the magazine “ Molla Nasraddin” Emir Hajiyev. He studied at the Technical School of Art in Baku in 1933–1936. In the early 40s, he took part in the Great Patriotic War. From 1942 to his death, he was director of the National Art Museum of Azerbaijan. In 1943, Kazim Kazimzade was awarded the title of Honored Art Worker of the Azerbaijan SSR and in 1950 he was awarded the Stalin Prize. Azerbaijan State Art Gallery is an organization for preservation and restoration of Azerbaijan's cultural heritage. About Azerbaijan State Art Gallery was established in 1974 by the Ministry of Culture of the Azerbaijan SSR on the basis of Azerbaijan State Exhibition Hall operating since 1960. The majority of exhibitions in Azerbaijan and abroad are mainly composed of the works stored in the gallery. The gallery has more than 14,000 paintings, graphics, sculptures, decorative and applied arts and contemporary art examples. Salam Salamzade
Salam Abdulgasim oghlu Salamzade (, 7 March 1908 — 12 May 1997) was a painter, Honored Art Worker of the Azerbaijan SSR (1940), and People's Artist of the Azerbaijan SSR (1982). Salam Salamzade's individual exhibitions were held in Baku (1959), (1962), (1974), Moscow (1969), (1974), and Kiev (1974), featuring his works. His works are also preserved in the museums, galleries, and private collections of foreign countries, alongside Azerbaijan. The painter was also involved in public activities and worked as the director of the Azerbaijan National Art Museum and the National museum of Azerbaijan literature named after Nizami Ganjavi. Tahir Salahov
Tahir Salahov ( Azerbaijani, in full: , '; 29 November 1928 – 21 May 2021) was a Soviet, Azerbaijani painter and draughtsman. He was First Secretary of the Artists' Union of the USSR (1973–1992), Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Arts, member of over 20 academies and other creative organizations throughout the world, including the academies of art of France, Spain, Germany, and Austria. He was awarded the honorary titles People's Artist of the USSR (1973), and People's Artist of the Azerbaijan SSR. Biography Salahov was born in Baku. Maral Rahmanzadeh
Maral Yusif gizi Rahmanzadeh (; 23 July 1916 – 18 March 2008) was a Soviet and Azerbaijani graphic artist and painter. She was awarded the honorary title of People's Artist of the Azerbaijan SSR (1964), and recipient of the State Prize. Biography Maral Rahmanzadeh was born in Mardakan, Russian Empire (now Azerbaijan). From 1930 to 1933 she studied at the Azerbaijan State Technical School of Arts and from 1934 to 1940 she continued her education at the Moscow State Institute of Arts. In 1940, after graduating from the institute, the master of graphic arts started working at the "Khudozhestvennaya Literatura" publishing house in Moscow. In 1941, the artist's father was subjected to repression and declared an enemy of the people. Six months later, he passed away in a Tashkent prison. M. Latif Husein oglu Karimov (; 17 November 1906 in Shusha – 8 September 1991 in Baku) was an Azerbaijani carpet designer known for his contributions to a variety of artistic fields, as well as for a number of books classifying and describing various designs of Azerbaijani rugs. Asaf Jafarov (; 28 July 1927, in Baku – 3 April 2000, in Baku) was a Soviet Azerbaijani painter, he was awarded the title of People's Artist of the Azerbaijani SSR. Early life and education Asaf Jafarov was born on 28 July 1927 in Old City (Baku). His first education was at a painting school named after Azim Azimzade from 1945 until 1950. From 1951 until 1957, he continued his education at Surikov Moscow Art Institute. Career In 1957, he was sent to India and Pakistan for creative trips by the Institute. Sattar Bahlulzade
Sattar Bahlulzade (; 15 December 1909 – 14 October 1974) was an Azerbaijani painter, best known for his landscape paintings depicting the nature of Azerbaijan. He is considered to be the founder of Azerbaijani Impressionism. Among Bahlulzade's best-known works are ''Tears of Kapaz'' (1965), ''Bank of the Gudiyalchay'' (1953), ''Dream of the Land'' (1961), ''Evening Above the Caspian Sea'' (1959), and ''Goygol'' (1964). His works have been featured in exhibitions in Azerbaijan, the Soviet Union, and other parts of the world.
