Saunders Park (Nova Scotia)
Saunders Park is an urban park in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. It is located in West End, Halifax on Chebucto Road at the site of the now defunct Halifax Civic Airport (on west side of Connaught Avenue between Bayers Road and Chebucto Road), the city's first aerodrome built on the former Bluebell Farm in 1931. The airfield had two grass airstrips, initially at 1800 x 600 feet and 2000 x 600 feet and extended by 200 and 250 respectively in 1938. It operated until 1941 when the land was converted to an army base and civil airport operations were moved to Dartmouth Airport (now CFB Shearwater) and then to Halifax International Airport in 1960. The hangars and terminal building were located near the present day park along Connaught Avenue. Long Lake Provincial Park (Nova Scotia)
Long Lake Provincial Park is located in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. It was initiated in 1981 by then Premier John Buchanan (Canadian politician), John Buchanan after Halifax's water supply had been shifted from the Spruce Hill/Long Lake/Chain Lakes watershed to the Pockwock Lake watershed near Hammonds Plains. The park, formally established in 1984, constitutes the bulk of these former watershed lands. Other portions were deeded to the municipality of Halifax, and the area around the Chain Lakes is still administered by the Halifax Regional Water Commission, since the Chain Lakes remain the city's emergency water supply. Dollar Lake Provincial Park
Dollar Lake Provincial Park is a seasonal provincial park located in the Musquodoboit Valley area of the Halifax Regional Municipality in Nova Scotia, Canada, in the community of Wyses Corner, 22 kilometres from the Halifax International Airport on the Old Guysborough Road ( Route 212). Dollar Lake takes its name from the story behind Nova Scotia's acquisition of the property. A horse farm was once located on the grounds; the owner sold his assets to the province for only $1.00. Sable Island National Park Reserve
Sable Island (, literally "island of sand") is a small, remote island off the coast of Nova Scotia, Canada. Sable Island is located in the North Atlantic Ocean, about southeast of Halifax, and about southeast of the closest point of mainland Nova Scotia. The island is staffed year-round by employees of Canada's National Parks agency, Parks Canada. The number of people on Sable Island at a given time fluctuates throughout the year, with this number rising during the summer months when the island is frequented by researchers and an increased staff complement. Notable for its role in early Canadian history and the Sable Island horse, the island is protected and managed by Parks Canada, which must grant permission prior to any visit. White Lake Wilderness Area
The White Lake Wilderness Area is a wilderness area located in Nova Scotia, Canada, in Halifax Regional Municipality. Several trails, all maintained by the Musquodoboit Trailways Association, pass through it; Gibraltar Rock Loop, White Lake Wilderness Trails, the Musquodoboit Rail Trail, the Bayers Lake Loop, and the Admiral Lake loop. Access to much of the remainder of the wilderness area is possible only by canoe, requiring multiple portages to get to some of the more remote lakes. The Wilderness area was established in the early 1990s as a commitment to protect certain areas of Nova Scotia that displayed unique terrain, fauna and/or flora. Blue Mountain-Birch Cove Lakes Wilderness Area
The Blue Mountain-Birch Cove Lakes Wilderness Area is located in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Considered to be of high ecological value, it is one of 40 designated wilderness areas in the province. The wilderness area would form the heart of the larger Blue Mountain-Birch Cove Lakes Regional Park, which has been proposed by the city since 2006. History The Metropolitan Area Planning Committee (MAPC), a former regional planning body, identified the area in the 1970s as having high conservation value. Wilderness area designation In 2009, the province created the Blue Mountain-Birch Cove Lakes Wilderness Area out of 1,316 hectares of Crown land.
