The Open Document Format for Office Applications (ODF), also known as OpenDocument, standardized as ISO 26300, is an open file format for word processor, word processing documents, spreadsheets, Presentation program, presentations and graphics and using Zip (file format), ZIP-compressed XML files. It was developed with the aim of providing an open, XML-based file format specification for office applications. The standard is developed and maintained by a technical committee in the OASIS (organization), Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (OASIS) consortium. StarOffice is a discontinued proprietary software, proprietary office suite. Its source code continues today in derived open-source office suites Collabora Online and LibreOffice. StarOffice supported the OpenOffice.org XML file format, as well as the OpenDocument standard, and could generate Portable Document Format, PDF and SWF, Flash formats. It included template (file format), templates, a macro (computer science), macro recorder, and a software development kit (SDK). The software originated in 1985 as StarWriter by Star Division, which marketed the suite with some success, primarily in Europe. An open file format is a file format for storing digital data, defined by an openly published specification usually maintained by a standards organization, and which can be used and implemented by anyone. ZIP is an archive file format that supports lossless compression, lossless data compression. A ZIP file may contain one or more files or directories that may have been compressed. The ZIP file format permits a number of Data compression, compression algorithms, though DEFLATE is the most common. Document File Format
A document file format is a Text file, text or binary file format for storing documents on a computer storage, storage media, especially for use by computers. There currently exists a multitude of incompatible document file formats. Examples of XML-based open format, open standards are DocBook, XHTML, and, more recently, the International Organization for Standardization, ISO/International Electrotechnical Commission, IEC standards OpenDocument (ISO 26300:2006) and Office Open XML (ISO 29500:2008). In 1993, the ITU-T tried to establish a standard for document file formats, known as the Open Document Architecture (ODA) which was supposed to replace all competing document file formats.
