Nijmegen ( , ; Nijmeegs: ) is the largest city in the Dutch province of Gelderland and the ninth largest of the Netherlands as a whole. Located on the Waal River close to the German border, Nijmegen is one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands and the first to be recognized as such in Roman times. In 2005, it celebrated 2,000 years of existence. Nijmegen became a free imperial city in 1230 and in 1402 a Hanseatic city. Since 1923 it has been a university city with the opening of a Catholic institution now known as the Radboud University Nijmegen. The city is well known for the annual International Four Days Marches Nijmegen event. Its population as of 2024 was 187,011. Radboud University (abbreviated as RU, , formerly ) is a public university, public research university located in Nijmegen, Netherlands. RU has seven faculties and more than 24,000 students. Established in 1923, Radboud University has consistently been included in the top 150 of universities in the world by four major university ranking tables. As of 2020, it ranks 105th in the Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities. Internationally, RU is known for its strong research output. International Four Days Marches Nijmegen
The International Four Day Marches Nijmegen (, ) is the largest multiple-day marching event in the world, with tens of thousands of participants. It is organised every year in Nijmegen, Netherlands in mid-July as a means of promoting sport and exercise. Participants walk , or daily, depending on their age and gender and, on completion, receive a royally approved medal Cross for the Four Day Marches, (Vierdaagsekruis). The participants are mostly civilians, with a few thousand military participants as well. Military participants' distance is 40 km, in uniform, carrying at least marching weight for men aged 18–49; for women, the weight is optional. Hubert Bruls
Hubertus Maria Franciscus "Hubert" Bruls (born 6 February 1966) is a Dutch politician who has served as Mayor of Nijmegen since 2012. A member of the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA), he has also served as chairman of the Dutch Security Council since 2016. Early life Bruls attended the former Bisschoppelijk College in Sittard – a gymnasium, the highest level of Dutch secondary education. He then studied political science at Radboud University Nijmegen, before working for the trade union NOVON/ ABVAKABO. From 1998, he served as a member of the municipal council of Nijmegen and later an alderman in its municipal executive. Career Bruls has held the mayorship of Nijmegen since May 2012, with the city's municipal council approving a second six-year term in 2018, and a third six-year term from 2024. Waal (river)
The Waal ( Dutch name, ) is the main distributary branch of the river Rhine flowing approximately through the Netherlands. It is the major waterway connecting the port of Rotterdam to Germany. Before it reaches Rotterdam, it joins with the Afgedamde Maas near Woudrichem to form the Boven Merwede. Along its length, Nijmegen, Tiel, Zaltbommel and Gorinchem are towns of importance with direct access to the river. The river, which is the main channel in the Rhine–Meuse–Scheldt delta system, carries 65% of the total flow of the Rhine. Gelderland ( , ), also known as Guelders ( ) in English, is a Provinces of the Netherlands, province of the Netherlands, located in the centre-east of the country. Veur-Lent is the name of an island in the Dutch river Waal. Kleverlandish ( or ; ) is a group of Low Franconian dialects spoken on both sides of the Dutch-German border along the Meuse and Rhine rivers. Hatert
Hatert is a suburb in the south of Nijmegen, in the Netherlands. As of 2021 it has a population of 10.115. It is situated between the centre of Nijmegen and the suburb A suburb (more broadly suburban area) is an area within a metropolitan area.
