Nepticulidae
Nepticulidae is a family of very small moths with a worldwide distribution. They are characterised by eyecaps over the eyes (see also Opostegidae, Bucculatricidae, Lyonetiidae). These pigmy moths or midget moths, as they are commonly known, include the smallest of all living moths, with a wingspan that can be as little as 3 mm in the case of the European pigmy sorrel moth, but more usually 3.5–10 mm. The wings of adult moths are narrow and lanceolate, sometimes with metallic markings, and with the venation very simplified compared to most other moths. The minute larvae usually are leaf miners but some species also mine seeds or bark of trees. The Pectinivalvinae, characterised by a "pectinifer" on the valve of the male genitalia, are endemic to Australia, where they mine the leaves of the tree families Myrtaceae (Scoble, 1983) or Cunoniaceae ( Eucryphiaceae), and Elaeocarpaceae (Hoare, 2000). This Australian group probably constitutes the sister group of other p ...

Pigmy Sorrel Moth
''Enteucha acetosae'', the pygmy sorrel moth, is a moth of the family Nepticulidae found in Europe. It is one of the smallest moths in the world with some having a wingspan of only 3mm. The larvae Leaf mines, mine the leaves of docks (''Rumex'' species), leaving bright red tissue around the mines. Life history The wingspan is 3–4 mm. (one of the world's smallest moths). The head is fuscous to blackish. The antennal eyecaps are whitish. The forewings are shining bronze with a broad shining silvery fascia at 3/4, preceded by a fuscous suffusion. The apical area beyond this rather dark purplish-fuscous. The hindwings are grey. There are two to three generations in western and central Europe. ;Egg cell, Ovum Eggs are laid on the underside of common sorrel (''Rumex acetosa''), sheep's sorrel (''Rumex acetosella'') and French sorrel (''Rumex scutatus''). ;Larvae Larvae are pale amber/yellow with a greenish gut. The head is pale amber with a faint brown tinge. They leaf miner ...

Stigmella (moth)
''Stigmella'' is a genus of moths of the family Nepticulidae. The genus was erected by Franz von Paula Schrank in 1802. ''Stigmella'' is a species-rich genus of tiny moths belonging to the family Nepticulidae, which contains the smallest moths, with a wingspan of only 2.5 mm. Approximately 320 species have been described, but it is likely that there are many more undescribed. Most of the dwarf moths have larvae that mine (eat the contents of the plant without breaking the surface) in the leaves of various plants, but there are also some that live in seeds or bark. They are difficult to identify. Adults must be reared and/or determined by microscopic examination of the genitalia. Many records are based on the form of the leafmine only.
