Music Schools In Germany
Music schools in Germany cater to pupils from an early age up to postgraduate students. They exist within and outside the formal education system. Musikschulen Public Music Schools are foundations for the musical education of children, adolescents and adults. They are usually in public ownership. They supplement rather than replacing music instruction in school. Public Music Schools can be found in most cities and towns. There were 914 public music schools in Germany as of January 1, 2009. Private Music Schools also exist, such as the "Musikschule Fröhlich" and the "Yamaha Schools of Music". Musikgymnasium A Music Gymnasium is a secondary school designed to prepare children for studies in music. They can be day or boarding schools. Full-time music education at a Musikgymnasium can begin as early as 10 years of age. The curriculum includes subjects such as Rhythm, Music Theory, Ear Training, Composition. Education In Germany
Education in Germany is primarily the responsibility of individual German States of Germany, states (), with the federal government only playing a minor role. While kindergarten (nursery school) is optional, formal education is compulsory for all children from the age of 6-7. Details vary from state to state. For example, in Bavaria, children need to attend school for a total of 12 years (of which 3 may be for an apprenticeship); while in Brandenburg, school must be attended until the end of the school year in which the pupil turns 18. Students can complete three types of school leaving qualifications, ranging from the more vocational Hauptschulabschluss and Mittlere Reife over to the more academic Abitur. The latter permits students to apply to study at university level. The Hochschule für Musik Detmold is a university-level music school situated in Detmold, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Academics The Hochschule offers performance degrees in composition, all orchestral instruments, piano, voice, opera, art-song, conducting, as well as degrees in church music and music education. Artistic Music Production (Musik-Tonmeister) is also offered at the Institute. Structure In 2007 there were 594 students matriculated, plus an additional 22 junior students.
