Moridae
The Moridae are a family of cod-like fishes, known as codlings, hakelings, and moras. Morids are marine fishes found throughout the world, and may be found at depths to , although most prefer shallower waters. In appearance, they greatly resemble the typical cods, from which can only be distinguished by their skeletal features and the structure of the swim bladder. They grow up to long (red codling The red codling or hoka (''Pseudophycis bachus'') is a morid cod of the genus ''Pseudophycis'', restricted to New Zealand, from the surface to 700 m. Eophycis
''Eophycis'' ("dawn '' Phycis''") is an extinct genus of prehistoric morid gadiform fish that lived during the early Oligocene epoch in the Paratethys Sea, where it is known from both the eastern and western regions. It represents the oldest fossil record of the Moridae. It contains three species: * ''E. froidefontainensis'' Pharisat, 1991 - Early Oligocene of France ( Froidefontaine Formation) * ''E. jamnensis'' Jerzmańska, 1968 (type species) - Early Oligocene of Poland ( Menilitic Formation) * ''E. pshekhiensis'' Rozenberg & Prokofiev, 2004 - Early Oligocene of North Caucasus, Russia ( Pshekha Formation) Several articulated, well-preserved specimens of ''E. jamnensis'' are known from Poland. Shortbeard Codling
The short beard codling (''Laemonema barbatulum'') is a species of marine bony fish in the family Moridae. Native to the western Atlantic Ocean, it is found on the continental slope at depths between . Description The shortbeard codling can grow to a maximum standard length of about and takes the form of a somewhat spindle-shaped cylinder. The snout is fairly blunt and the upper jaw is slightly longer than the lower jaw. There is a short barbel on the chin and a flattened spine on the operculum. There are two dorsal fins with no spines and a total of from 69 to 76 soft rays. The first dorsal fin has 6 rays, the second of which is the longest, and the second dorsal fin originates immediately behind the first fin. Each pectoral fin has 17 to 23 soft rays. The pelvic fins are widely separated and each has two elongated soft rays; these fins originate to the front of the pectoral fins. The anal fin has no spines and has 57 to 63 soft rays. The caudal fin is small and rounded. The g ...

Swim Bladder
The swim bladder, gas bladder, fish maw, or air bladder is an internal gas-filled organ (anatomy), organ in bony fish that functions to modulate buoyancy, and thus allowing the fish to stay at desired water depth without having to maintain lift (force), lift via swimming, which expends more energy. Also, the Dorsum (biology), dorsal position of the swim bladder means that the expansion of the bladder moves the center of mass downwards, allowing it to act as a stabilizing apparatus. Additionally, the swim bladder functions as a resonating chamber (anatomy), resonating chamber to produce or receive sound. The swim bladder is evolutionarily homology (biology), homologous to the lungs of tetrapods and lungfish, and some ray-finned fish such as bowfins have also evolved similar respiratory functions in their swim bladders. Charles Darwin remarked upon this in ''On the Origin of Species'', and reasoned that the lung in air-breathing vertebrates had derived from a more primitive swim b ...
