Modum
Modum is a municipality in Buskerud county, Norway. The administrative centre of the municipality is the town of Vikersund. The municipality of Modum was established on 1 January 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). The area has a long tradition of skiing with several famous skiers. Modum is home to one of the largest ski jumping hills in the world, Vikersundbakken which is situated in Heggen, outside Geithus. The hill record, established in 2017 is a jump of . General information Name The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the old ''Modum'' farm (Old Norse: ''Móðheimr''), since the first church was built here. The first element is ''móða'' which means "river" (here the Drammenselva river) and the last element is ''heimr'' which means "home", " homestead", or "farm". Buskerud
Buskerud () is a Counties of Norway, county and a current electoral district in Norway, bordering Akershus, Oslo, Innlandet, Vestland, Telemark and Vestfold. The region extends from the Oslofjord and Drammensfjorden in the southeast to Hardangervidda mountain range in the northwest. The county administration was in modern times located in Drammen. Buskerud was merged with Akershus and Østfold into the newly created Viken (county), Viken County on 1 January 2020. On 23 February 2022, the Viken County Council voted in a 49 against 38 decision to submit an application to the Norwegian government for a county demerger. Due to this, Buskerud (except the area forming the defunct municipalities of Røyken and Hurum) was re-established in 2024. Ringerike (traditional District)
Ringerike is a traditional district in Norway, commonly consisting of the municipalities Hole, Norway, Hole and Ringerike (municipality), Ringerike in Buskerud county. In older times, Ringerike had a larger range which went westward to the municipalities Krødsherad, Modum, and Sigdal, also in Buskerud. Ringerike has a rich history that is connected with one of the most notable kings in the history of Norway, the father of King Harald Fairhair Halfdan the Black, who subdued Gandalf Alfgeirsson, King of Alfheim and half of Vingulmork, and the Dagling clan. Vikersund
Vikersund is a town of 3,232 (in 2020) inhabitants in the municipality capital of Modum, in the county of Buskerud, Norway. Overview Vikersund is located 30 kilometers south of Hønefoss and 40 kilometers northwest of Drammen. The village is located at the southwestern arm of Tyrifjorden. Drammenselva enters Tyrifjorden by Vikerfossen. Trunk road Highway 35 passes Vikersund. Vikersund station is a railway station on Randsfjordbanen which was established in 1866, two years before Randsfjordbanen between Drammen and Randsfjord was completed. Blaafarveværket
Blaafarveværket, or the Blue Colour Works, was a mining and industrial company located at Åmot in Modum in Buskerud, Norway, which existed from 1776 to 1898, and which was Norway's largest mining company in the first half of the 19th century. The works mined cobalt ore and manufactured by smelting blue cobalt glass ( smalt) and cobalt blue (cobalt aluminate) pigment. Simoa
Simoa is the name of a river which flows through the municipalities of Sigdal and Modum in Buskerud County, Norway. Location The Simoa river runs from Lake Soneren through the municipality of Sigdal in a south-easterly course until it flows into Drammenselva at Åmot in Modum. The river begins a few miles north of Lake Haglebuvatna where it is initially known as the Haglebu, later becoming the Eggedøla as it flows through the valley of Eggedal. Sigdal is a Municipalities of Norway, municipality in Buskerud Counties of Norway, County, Norway. The administrative centre of the municipality is the village of Prestfoss. Vikersundbakken
Vikersundbakken or Vikersund Hill is a ski flying ski jumping hill, hill at Vikersund in Modum, Norway. It is one of the two largest purpose-built ski flying hills in the world. Nine list of the longest ski jumps, world records have been set there. The complex consists of a large hill, a normal hill and several training hills. The hill originally constructed by Kristian Hovde was opened in 1936 as a large hill. It was rebuilt as ski flying hill in 1964, and was modified in 1989, 1999 and 2010. The present large hill was built in 1988. Vikersundbakken was the first ski flying hill to receive floodlights (sport), floodlights in 2006. Geithus
Geithus is a village in Modum municipality of Buskerud, Norway. It is situated between the villages of Åmot and Vikersund. Geithus is located where the southwestern arm of Tyrifjorden ends and drains into Drammenselva. Geithusbrua is a cable bridge, that spans the junction where Tyrifjorden turns into Drammenselva. There are two hydroelectric powerplants; Geithusfoss kraftverk and Gravfoss kraftverk. The area around Geithus in forested. Originally, there was an active pulp and paper industry in Geithus principally through the operation of ''Katfos Fabrikker''. Production of paper, pulp and cellulose started in 1898. The operating was sold to Norske Skog Follum in 1970 and production stopped in 1983. There is a forty-minute trip to Drammen, and a little over an hour to Oslo. Counties Of Norway
There are 15 counties in Norway. The 15 county, counties are administrative division, administrative regions that are the first-level administrative divisions of Norway. The counties are further subdivided into 357 municipalities of Norway, municipalities ().
