MetroLink (St. Louis)
MetroLink is a light rail system that serves the Greater St. Louis area. Operated by Metro Transit in a shared fare system with MetroBus, the two-line, 38-station system runs from St. Louis Lambert International Airport and Shrewsbury in Missouri to Scott Air Force Base in Illinois. Intermediate destinations include downtown Clayton, Forest Park, and downtown St. Louis. It is the only U.S. light rail system that crosses state lines. MetroLink shares some characteristics of a light metro or rapid transit service, including a largely independent right-of-way, a higher top speed, and level boarding at all platforms. Being a light rail network, but with sections and miles of subway tunnels creating a separate right-of-way, MetroLink can therefore be categorised as a semi-metro system. In , the system had an annual ridership of , or about per weekday. History Construction on the initial MetroLink line from St. Louis Lambert International Airport to the 5th & Missour ...

The term semi-metro refers to a category of urban rail transport in which trams run partly on grade separation, separate tracks to avoid conflicts with other traffic, by using tunnels and elevated railway, viaducts. This type of transit is also referred to by various other terms, including subway–surface light rail or subway–surface system. Dedicated stretches of track are designed to function similarly to regular rapid transit, metro or rapid transit lines. One key difference from metro lines (rapid transit) is that a metro line has an entirely conflict-free track, often completely grade separated, whereas semi-metro has lines which only partially run in tunnels and on viaducts. Systems described as semi-metro run with tram vehicles as they are usually developed from an existing tram network. Semi-metro routes are operated by either regular trams (with or without Types of trams#Low-floor, low floor) or with specially developed tramcars (light rail vehicles), such as the ...
