Merrillville is in east-central Lake County, in the Chicago metropolitan area. On January 1, 2015, Merrillville became the List of towns in Indiana, most populated town in Indiana, as Fishers, Indiana, Fishers in Hamilton County, Indiana, Hamilton County was converted from a town to a city. Schererville ( , ) is a town in St. John and Center townships, Lake County, Indiana, United States. The population was 29,646 at the 2020 census It is a suburb of Chicago, located 30 miles south of the city. History Long before Indiana became a state, long before the founding of Schererville, people called the area the "Crossroads," as several Native American trails intersected here, that later became routes for the wagons of settlers traveling west. One of those settlers was Nicholas Scherer, who was born in 1830 at Scheuern, today part of Tholey, Saarland, in southwestern Germany, who arrived in the U.S. in 1846. Crown Point is a city in and the county seat of Lake County, Indiana, United States. The population was 34,884 per the 2023 American Community Survey. The city was incorporated in 1868. Winfield ( ) is a town in Winfield Township, Lake County, Indiana. The population was 2,298 at the time of the 2000 census, 4,383 in 2010, and 5,987 in 2019. The town was incorporated in 1993 in order to keep the residents from being annexed by other neighboring communities. Prior to that time it had been part of Winfield Township as an unincorporated town. Winfield is named for General Winfield Scott. The town is served by the Crown Point post office and addresses in Winfield share the Crown Point ZIP code. Calumet Township is one of eleven townships in Lake County, Indiana. As of the 2020 census, its population was 91,970, containing 47,425 housing units, down from 104,258 at 2010. History The Lake County commissioners established Calumet Township in 1883 from a six-mile-wide strip of North Township. The five-mile-wide strip to the east became part of Hobart Township, and the five-mile-wide strip to the west remained North Township. The commissioners also assigned a row of sections formerly in Ross Township to Calumet Township, including the community of Ross itself. In 1922, following a protracted dispute over road funding, the county commissioners transferred Miller Beach, which had formerly been in Hobart Township, to Calumet Township.
