Luxury Goods
In economics, a luxury good (or upmarket good) is a good (economics), good for which demand (economics), demand increases more than what is proportional as income rises, so that expenditures on the good become a more significant proportion of overall spending. Luxury goods are in contrast to necessity goods, where demand increases proportionally less than income. ''Luxury goods'' is often used synonymously with superior goods. Definition and etymology The word "luxury" derives from the Latin verb ''luxor'' meaning to overextend or strain. From this, the noun ''luxuria'' and verb ''luxurio'' developed, "indicating immoderate growth, swelling, ... in persons and animals, willful or unruly behavior, disregard for moral restraints, and licensciousness", and the term has had negative connotations for most of its long history. One definition in the OED is a "thing desirable but not necessary". A luxury good can be identified by comparing the demand for the good at one point in time agai ...

Luxury (Georgia Band)
Luxury is a rock band from Toccoa, Georgia. They began playing together as The Shroud at Toccoa Falls College in the early 1990s, and changed their name to Luxury just before signing with Tooth & Nail Records and releasing their debut album, ''Amazing And Thankyou''. Luxury toured extensively in the months following ''Amazing And Thankyous release. In late 1995, a car accident between touring engagements resulted in most of the band's members being hospitalized. Luxury took a year-long hiatus before going back on tour to support their second album, ''The Latest & The Greatest'', though with fewer dates than initially anticipated. After growing more and more unhappy with the continually waning resources and promotion provided them by Tooth & Nail, they opted (in 1997) not to renew their contract with the label, and instead released their third album, ''Luxury'' (1999), on Bulletproof Records. Soon after, Luxury broke up. Jamey Bozeman started a new band called Canary, which so ...

Luxury Tax (sports)
A luxury tax in professional sports is a surcharge put on the aggregate payroll of a team to the extent to which it exceeds a predetermined guideline level set by the league. The ostensible purpose of this "tax" is to prevent teams in major markets with high incomes from signing almost all of the more talented players and hence destroying the competitive balance necessary for a sport to maintain fan interest. The money derived from the "tax" is either divided among the teams that play in the smaller markets, presumably to allow them to have more revenue to devote toward the contracts of high-quality players, or in the case of Major League Baseball, used by the league for other pre-defined purposes. In North America, Major League Baseball has implemented the luxury tax system. The National Basketball Association also has a NBA Salary Cap, luxury tax provision; its utility is somewhat limited by the fact that the league also has a salary cap provision. The "hard" salary cap of the N ...

Luxury (Fantastic Plastic Machine Album)
''Luxury'' is the second studio album by Japanese musician Fantastic Plastic Machine. It was released on September 10, 1998, by Readymade Records. The album was released in Germany on March 29, 1999, by Bungalow Records and in the United States on April 27, 1999, by Emperor Norton Records. ''Luxury'' is a continuation of Fantastic Plastic Machine's previous work in Shibuya-kei, though in some tracks there are indications of a shift towards house music with 1960s northern soul and 1970s Philadelphia soul influences, a path he explored more on his next album ''Beautiful''. ''Luxury'' features guest vocals from Lorraine Bowen, Simon Fisher Turner, and Yukari Fresh, among others. Critical reception Sarah Zupko of ''PopMatters'' wrote, "''Luxury'' revels in international, otherworldly sounds and collaborations with musicians who perfectly suit Tanaka's experimental bent." She called the album "an enjoyable, eclectic effort that fans of sophisticated Euro pop are sure to adore." ...

Luxury Tax
A luxury tax is a tax on luxury goods: products not considered essential. A luxury tax may be modeled after a sales tax or VAT, charged as a percentage on all items of particular classes, except that it mainly directly affects the wealthy because the wealthy are the most likely to buy luxuries such as expensive cars, jewelry, etc. It may also be applied only to purchases over a certain amount; for instance, some U.S. states charge luxury tax on real estate transactions over a certain limit. A luxury good may be a Veblen good, which is a type of good for which demand increases as price increases. Therefore, the effect of a luxury tax may be to increase demand for certain luxury goods. In general, however, since a luxury good has a high income elasticity of demand by definition, both the income effect and substitution effect will decrease demand sharply as the tax rises. Theory Luxury tax is based on the concept of positional goods, which are scarce goods whose value a ...

Luxury Box
The luxury box (or skybox) and club seating constitute the most expensive class of seating in arenas and stadiums, and generate much higher revenues than regular seating. Club ticketholders often receive exclusive access to an indoor part of the venue through private club entrances, to areas containing special restaurants, bars, merchandise stands, and lounge areas of the venue that are not otherwise available to regular ticketholders. Location These special private seating sections located within stadiums, arenas, and other sporting and entertainment venues, are typically located in the midsection and/or main stand or grandstand. However at some tennis venues (where stadiums are smaller) the luxury boxes are often but not always located at the lowest ring of seats, nearest to the playing court. Stadium luxury boxes sometimes have their indoor facility glass panels which can be opened to a balcony type area, in order for the user to feel immersed in the action of the event. In ...

Luxury Apartment
A luxury apartment is a type of apartment that is intended to provide its occupant with higher-than-average levels of comfort, quality and convenience. While the term is often used to describe high-end regular apartments, or even typical apartments as a form of aspirational marketing, a true luxury apartment is one that is variously defined as being in the top 10% of transactions on the market, or having a total value of more than $4–5 million US dollars, with "ultra-luxury" apartments being valued above US$10 million. However, it can also mean any apartment with extra amenities, such as a Doorman (profession), doorman, yoga studios or bowling alleys, among others. History The term "luxury apartment" was used since the postwar era, although its definition was less grandiose than in recent times. In the 1980s, for example, having a doorman (profession), doorman for the building was sufficient to mark an apartment as "luxury". Competition to make the most luxurious apa ...
