Liminality
In anthropology, liminality () is the quality of ambiguity or disorientation that occurs in the middle stage of a rite of passage, when participants no longer hold their pre-ritual status but have not yet begun the transition to the status they will hold when the rite is complete. During a rite's liminal stage, participants "stand at the threshold" between their previous way of structuring their identity, time, or community, and a new way (which completing the rite establishes). The concept of liminality was first developed in the early twentieth century by folklorist Arnold van Gennep and later taken up by Victor Turner. More recently, usage of the term has broadened to describe political and cultural change as well as rites. During liminal periods of all kinds, social hierarchies may be reversed or temporarily dissolved, continuity of tradition may become uncertain, and future outcomes once taken for granted may be thrown into doubt. Liminal Deity
A liminal deity is a god or goddess in mythology who presides over thresholds, gates, or doorways; "a crosser of boundaries". These gods are believed to oversee a state of transition of some kind; such as, the old to the new, the unconscious to the conscious state, the familiar to the unknown. Types of liminal deities include dying-and-rising deities, various agricultural deities, psychopomps and those who descend into the underworld: crossing the threshold between life and death. Vegetation deities mimic the annual dying and returning of plant life, making them seasonally cyclical liminal deities in contrast to the one-time journey typical of the dying-and-rising myth. Liminal Being
Liminal beings are entities that cannot easily be placed into a single category of existence. The concept was developed by the cultural anthropologist Victor Turner. It is associated with the threshold state of liminality, from Latin ''līmen'', "threshold". Liminal entities Turner considered that liminal entities, such as those undergoing initiation rites, often appeared in the form of monsters, so as to represent the co-presence of opposites—high/low; good/bad—in the liminal experience. Bardo
In some schools of Buddhism, ''bardo'' ( Wylie: ''bar do'') or ''antarābhava'' (Sanskrit, Chinese and Japanese: 中有, romanized in Chinese as ''zhōng yǒu'' and in Japanese as ''chū'u'') is an intermediate, transitional, or liminal state between death and rebirth. The concept arose soon after Gautama Buddha's death, with a number of earlier Buddhist schools accepting the existence of such an intermediate state, while other schools rejected it. Liminal States
''Liminal States'' is a novel by Zack Parsons, published in March 2012. The story principally follows two men, Warren Groves and Gideon Long, who become immortal in 1874 through a process they don't fully understand. Over the course of three sections, set in 1874, 1951 and 2006, the story follows their lives across an increasingly divergent alternate history America. As part of the build-up to the novel's release, Parsons also published a related serial, "The Reificant," following an alien's encounter with the same form of immortality. Plot The novel contains three main sections: The Builder, The Judge and The Mother, which are respectively a western, noir and science fiction/ horror. They are separated by two shorter sections and supplemented by "The Reificant", a serial published in chapters between February 2 and March 23, 2012, on Something Awful, where Parsons was also a regular writer. Sigur Rós () is an Icelandic post-rock band that formed in 1994 in Reykjavík. Igor Cavalera
Igor Graziano Cavalera (born 4 September 1970) is a Brazilian musician, best known as the former drummer for the heavy metal band Sepultura, which he co-founded with his brother Max in 1984. Max left the band in 1997, and Igor himself would depart nine years later, making him the last original member of Sepultura to leave the band. The brothers have since reunited in the band Cavalera Conspiracy. He has played in the bands Nailbomb and Strife. As his hip-hop influences grew stronger, he began to DJ. Liminal Space (aesthetic)
In Internet aesthetics, liminal spaces are empty or abandoned places that appear eerie, forlorn, and often surreal. Liminal spaces are commonly places of transition, pertaining to the concept of liminality. Research from the ''Journal of Environmental Psychology'' has indicated that liminal spaces may appear eerie or strange because they fall into an uncanny valley of architecture and physical places. An article from ''Pulse: The Journal of Science and Culture'' has attributed this eeriness to familiar places lacking their usually observed context. Limen
In physiology, psychology, or psychophysics, a limen or a liminal point is a sensory threshold of a physiological or psychological response. Such points delineate boundaries of perception; that is, a limen defines a sensory threshold beyond which a particular stimulus becomes perceivable, and below which it remains unperceivable. Liminal, as an adjective, means situated at a sensory threshold, hence barely perceptible. Subliminal means below perception. The absolute threshold is the lowest amount of sensation detectable by a sense organ.
