The Irish Sea is a body of water that separates the islands of Ireland and Great Britain. It is linked to the Celtic Sea in the south by St George's Channel and to the Inner Seas off the West Coast of Scotland in the north by the North Channel (Great Britain and Ireland), North Channel. Anglesey, North Wales, is the largest island in the Irish Sea, followed by the Isle of Man. The term ''Manx Sea'' may occasionally be encountered (, , ). Irish (game)
Irish or the Irish Game was an Anglo-Scottish tables game for two players that was popular from the 16th to the mid-18th centuries before being superseded by its derivative, the "faster paced" backgammon. In its day, Irish was "esteemed among the best games at Tables." Its name notwithstanding, Irish was one of the most international forms of tables games, the equivalent of French ''toutes tables'', Italian ''tavole reale'' and Spanish ''todas tablas'',Forgeng, Johnson and Cram (2003), p. 269. the latter name first being used in the 1283 ''El Libro de los Juegos'', a translation of Arabic manuscripts by the Toledo School of Translators. The name may have been coined to distinguish it from Ludus Anglicorum, the English Game which was older. Henry Cooke "Irish" McIlveen (July 27, 1880 – October 18, 1960), commonly nicknamed "Irish" because he was born in Belfast, was a Major League Baseball outfielder. He played for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1906 and the New York Highlanders in 1908–1909. Irish Meusel
Emil Frederick "Irish" Meusel (June 9, 1893 – March 1, 1963) was an American baseball left fielder. He played in the major leagues between 1914 and 1927 for the Washington Senators, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Giants, and Brooklyn Robins. With the Giants, he played in four consecutive World Series in the early 1920s. He was the brother of major league player Bob Meusel. Early life Meusel was born in Oakland, California, and he attended Manual Arts High School in Los Angeles. He was of German and French ancestry; he acquired the nickname "Irish" because his pale skin and red hair reminded people of an Irish person. After playing minor league baseball in the Pacific Coast League (PCL), Meusel had his contract purchased by the Washington Senators in 1914, He played one major league game for the Senators that year, but he spent most of the season on loan to the Elmira club of the New York State League. Nellie Elizabeth "Irish" McCalla (December 25, 1928 – February 1, 2002) was an American film and television actress and artist best known as the title star of the 1950s television series '' Sheena, Queen of the Jungle''. She co-starred with actor Chris Drake. McCalla was also a " Vargas Girl" model for pin-up girl artist Alberto Vargas. Biography Early life Born in Pawnee City, Nebraska, she was one of eight siblings born to Lloyd, a butcher, and Nettie (''née'' Geiger) McCalla.
