The history of the United States men's national soccer team began with that team's first international match in 1916. Highlights from the team's early history include reaching the semifinals of the inaugural 1930 World Cup (later recognized by FIFA as third place finish based on overall records), and defeating England in a remarkable upset in the 1950 World Cup. United States V England (1950 FIFA World Cup)
On 29 June 1950, the United States defeated England 1–0 in a World Cup group match at Estádio Independência in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Before the game, England were heavy favorites against a hastily assembled U.S. team, which was composed of part-time players. The game's only goal was scored by Haitian-born U.S. center forward Joe Gaetjens. This game and the U.S. team were profiled by author Geoffrey Douglas in his book ''The Game of Their Lives'', which was made into a film of the same name (later renamed ''The Miracle Match''). A total of three club teams competed, two representing the United States, both from host city St. Louis, and one representing Canada, from Galt (now Cambridge), Ontario. The 1904 Summer Olympics (officially the Games of the III Olympiad and also known as St. Louis 1904) were an international multi-sport event held in St. Louis, Missouri, United States, from 1 July to 23 November 1904. Many events were conducted at what is now known as Francis Field (St. Louis County, Missouri), Francis Field on the campus of Washington University in St. Louis. Harry Cooper (soccer)
Harry "Buck" Cooper was an American soccer player who earned two caps, scoring one goal, with the U.S. national team in 1916. He played in the National Association Football League and American Soccer League. International On August 20, 1916, the U.S. national team played its first official international game, a 3–2 victory over Sweden in Sweden. Cooper scored the third U.S. goal in the game in a solo run down the left side. His second, and last, cap came in a 1–1 tie with Norway on September 3, 1916. Charles Ellis (soccer)
Charles Henry Ellis (1890–1954) was an American soccer player who is best known for scoring a goal in each of the U.S. national team's first two games. Ellis played both forward and midfield during his career. His first recorded team was Columbia Oval of the New York State Amateur League for which he played from at least 1908 until 1914. He then moved to Brooklyn Celtic of the New York State Association Football League. Celtic went to the 1915 American Cup final before falling to the Kearny Scots. In 1916, the United States Football Association (USFA) organized the first games for its national team. USFA was admitted to FIFA in 1913 but World War I prevented the association from playing national team games. However, in 1916, USFA decided to send the team to Scandinavia to play teams from other neutral countries. Dick Spalding
Charles Harry "Dick" Spalding (October 13, 1893 – February 3, 1950) was an American soccer and baseball player. He played the first two games in the history of the United States men's national soccer team, U.S. men's national soccer team and competed in professional soccer for nearly fifteen years, primarily with teams based in Pennsylvania. Besides, Spalding spent two seasons in Major League baseball and later served as a first base coach. Kearny, New Jersey
Kearny ( ) is a town in the western part of Hudson County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey, and a suburb of Newark. As of the 2020 United States census, the town's population was 41,999, an increase of 1,315 (+3.2%) from the 2010 census count of 40,684, which in turn reflected an increase of 171 (+0.4%) from the 40,513 counted in the 2000 census.
