Tarbes (; Gascon language, Gascon: ''Tarba'') is a Communes of France, commune in the Hautes-Pyrénées Departments of France, department in the Occitania (administrative region), Occitanie Regions of France, region of southwestern France. It is the capital of Bigorre and of the Hautes-Pyrénées. It has been a commune since 1790. It was known as ''Turba'' or ''Tarba'' in Ancient Rome, Roman times. Michel Pélieu
Michel Pélieu (born 26 June 1946) is a French politician. Biography A member of the Radical Left Party (PRG), Pélieu was elected mayor of Loudenvielle from 1977 to 2011. In 1985, he became general counsel of the canton of Bordères-Louron, in Hautes-Pyrénées. Since the French senate elections in 2001, he has been the deputy of François Fortassin. During the local elections of 2011, he was elected with 70% of votes in the canton of Bordères-Louron and ran for the presidency of the General Council, facing past president Josette Durrieu. After a tight turn, Pélieu became chairman of the Departmental Council of Hautes-Pyrénées. The Pyrenees are a mountain range straddling the border of France and Spain. They extend nearly from their union with the Cantabrian Mountains to Cap de Creus on the Mediterranean coast, reaching a maximum elevation of at the peak of Aneto. Bigorre (; Gascon: ''Bigòrra'') is a region in southwest France, historically an independent county and later a French province, located in the upper watershed of the Adour, on the northern slopes of the Pyrenees, part of the larger region known as Gascony. Today Bigorre comprises the centre and west of the ''département'' of Hautes-Pyrénées, with two small exclaves in the neighbouring Pyrénées Atlantiques. Its inhabitants are called '' Bigourdans''.
