Greenway (landscape)
A greenway is usually a shared-use path along a strip of undeveloped land, in an urban or rural area, set aside for recreational use or environmental protection. Greenways are frequently created out of Rail trails, disused railways, canal towpaths, utility company right of way (transportation), rights of way, or derelict industrial land. Greenways can also be linear parks, and can serve as wildlife corridors. The path's surface may be paved and often serves multiple users: walkers, runners, bicyclists, skaters and hikers. A characteristic of greenways, as defined by the European Greenways Association, is "ease of passage": that is that they have "either low or zero gradient", so that they can be used by all "types of users, including mobility impaired people". In Southern England, the term also refers to ancient trackways or green lane (road), green lanes, especially those found on chalk downlands, like the Ridgeway. Bicycle Boulevard
A bicycle boulevard, sometimes referred to as a neighborhood greenway, neighborway, neighborhood bikeway or neighborhood byway is a type of bikeway composed of a low-speed street which has been "optimized" for bicycle traffic. Bicycle boulevards discourage cut-through motor-vehicle traffic but may allow local motor-vehicle traffic at low speeds. They are designed to give priority to bicyclists as through-going traffic. They are intended as a low-cost, politically popular way to create a connected network of streets with good bicyclist comfort and/or safety. European Greenways Association
In May 1997, the first ''European Conference on Soft Traffic and Railways Paths'' (held at Val-Dieu Abbey, Belgium) voted to set up the European Greenways Association (EGWA). This association was created by many local, regional and national associations active in the scope of sustainable transport, willing to share their knowledge and objectives at a European level. A greenway is defined as a stand-alone route for non-motorised traffic, developed with the following objectives: to integrate facilities & increase environmental value and quality of life. Greenways encompass the following characteristics: suitability of width, slope & surface to allow secure, appropriate use for a wide range of users including mobility impaired people. The Manhattan Waterfront Greenway is a waterfront greenway (landscape), greenway for walking or cycling, long, around the island of Manhattan, in New York City. The largest portions are operated by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation. It is separated from motor traffic, and many sections also separate pedestrians from cyclists. Boyne Greenway
The Boyne Greenway or Boyneside Trail is a greenway, cycle track and walkway along the Oldbridge section of the Boyne Navigation in Ireland. It runs from Pass, County Meath to opposite the entrance to the 'Battle of the Boyne' Visitor Centre. A seven kilometre continuation of the route, from Ship Street in Drogheda to Mornington, County Meath, along the Boyne Estuary was proposed in the early 21st century. In December 2020, further information was sought on the proposal. The plan was rejected in September 2023, due to the potential impact on Special Areas of Conservation the route would run near. Concerns about the project had been raised by BirdWatch Ireland, who feared the impact that a greenway would have on migrating birds in the Boyne Estuary SPA. Waterford Greenway
The Waterford Greenway, also known locally as the Déise Greenway, is a route on a former railway track in County Waterford, Ireland, used for cycling and hiking. It opened in March 2017, on what was originally the Mallow/Waterford railway line, and forms part of EuroVelo 1 route. The Waterford Greenway features 11 bridges, three viaducts and a 400-metre tunnel and runs between the city of Waterford, Mount Congreve, Kilmeaden, Kilmacthomas, and Dungarvan, and passes along part of the Copper Coast. At 46 km, it is Ireland's longest greenway. The Waterford and Suir Valley Railway shares the route along the banks of River Suir. In December 2017, it was announced that over 250,000 had used the new route since it opened in March. Greater Grand Forks Greenway
The Greater Grand Forks Greenway is a huge greenway bordering the Red River and Red Lake River in the twin cities of Grand Forks, North Dakota and East Grand Forks, Minnesota (commonly called Greater Grand Forks). At 2,200 acres (9 km2), the Greenway is more than twice the size of New York City's Central Park. It has an extensive, system of bike paths, which are used by bikers, walkers, joggers, and rollerbladers. In 2007, the system was designated as a National Recreation Trail by the National Park Service. Several city parks and golf courses are also located within the Greenway on each side of the river. Other amenities include wildlife observation areas, a state campground, fishing areas, interpretive displays, wildflower gardens, and fields for various athletics including softball, basketball, and disc golf. East Coast Greenway
The East Coast Greenway is a pedestrian and bicycle route between Maine and Florida along the East Coast of the United States. The nonprofit East Coast Greenway Alliance was created in 1991 with the goal to use the entire route with off-road, shared-use paths; , over of the route (35%) meets these criteria. Greenway Footpath, London
The Greenway is a long footpath and cycleway in London, mostly in the London Borough of Newham, on the embankment containing the Joseph Bazalgette Northern Outfall Sewer. Route The western end of the Greenway is Victoria Park, London (London Borough of Tower Hamlets). The route runs alongside Wick Lane, under the East Cross Route to Fish Island. It then crosses the River Lea into Newham, continuing to Stratford and West Ham. The eastern end is at Royal Docks Road in Beckton. Midtown Greenway
The Midtown Greenway is a rail trail in Minneapolis, Minnesota that follows the path of an abandoned route of the Milwaukee Road, Milwaukee Road railway. It is considered under segregated cycle facilities. Used both recreationally and for commuting, the partially below-grade Greenway runs east–west about one block north of Lake Street (Minneapolis), Lake Street.
