Goulburn ( ) is a regional city in the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales, Australia, approximately south-west of Sydney and north-east of Canberra. Goulburn Railway Station
Goulburn railway station is a heritage-listed railway station located on the Main Southern line, serving the Southern Tablelands city of Goulburn. Opened on 19 May 1869, it was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999. Goulburn Station is operated by NSW TrainLink, and has several train and coach services to destinations including Canberra, Albury, Melbourne, Griffith, Moss Vale, Campbelltown and Sydney. History The foundation stone for the main station building was laid by the Mayor of Goulburn, William Davies, on 12 May 1868. At the time, the explorer William Hovell lived immediately opposite the main station building on Sloane Street. Argyle County
Argyle County was one of the original Nineteen Counties in New South Wales and is now one of the 141 cadastral divisions of New South Wales. It includes the area around Goulburn. It is bounded by Lake George in the south-west, the Shoalhaven River in the east, and the Wollondilly River in the north-east. Argyle County was named by Governor Macquarie after his native county in Scotland. He named it while inspecting the area in 1820. In 1829 the Act for Instituting and regulating Courts of General and Quarter Sessions in New South Wales established courts in the county at Cookbundoon, Goulburn Plains and Inverary. James Byrne was Assistant Surveyor for the County in 1832. In 1835 Argyle had a magistrate and police force. In 1852 it had an area of and population of 5,565. Hume Highway
The Hume Highway, including the sections now known as the Hume Freeway and the Hume Motorway, is one of Australia's major inter-city national highways, running for between Melbourne in the southwest and Sydney in the northeast. Upgrading of the route from Sydney's outskirts to Melbourne's outskirts to dual carriageway was completed on 7 August 2013. From north to south, the road is called the Hume Highway in metropolitan Sydney, the Hume Motorway between the Cutler Interchange and Berrima, the Hume Highway elsewhere in New South Wales and the Hume Freeway in Victoria. Henry Goulburn
Henry Goulburn PC FRS (19 March 1784 – 12 January 1856) was a British Conservative statesman and a member of the Peelite faction after 1846. Background and education Born in London, Goulburn was the eldest son of a wealthy planter, Munbee Goulburn, of Amity Hall, Vere Parish, Jamaica, and his wife Susannah, eldest daughter of William Chetwynd, 4th Viscount Chetwynd. He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge. Goulburn lived in Betchworth, Dorking, in Betchworth House for much of his life. Sugar plantation owner Goulburn's inheritance included a number of sugar estates in Jamaica, with Amity Hall in the parish of Vere, now Clarendon Parish, being the most important. Slave labour was still being used to work the sugar plantations when he inherited the estates. Goulburn never visited Jamaica himself due to his health and political work. Goulburn Parish
The Parish of Goulburn is a parish of Argyle County which includes most of the city of Goulburn, New South Wales. Geography It is bounded by the Wollondilly River to the north. The central area of Goulburn is in the parish, however some outlying suburbs are not, such as Bradfordville and Kenmore which are in Narrangarril, and North Goulburn which is in Towrang parish. Mulwarree ponds is the eastern boundary near Goulburn, although the parish also includes some land to the east of this river further south, including the airport. Some land to the south and west of the city is also included in the parish, including Brisbane Grove and Tirrannaville. The Main Southern Railway (or Great Southern Railway) is a major railway in New South Wales, Australia. It runs from Sydney to Albury, near the Victoria, Australia, Victorian border.
