Gijón () or () is a city and municipality in north-western Spain. It is the largest city and Municipalities of Spain, municipality by population in the autonomous communities of Spain, autonomous community of Asturias. It is located on the coast of the Cantabrian Sea in the Bay of Biscay, in the central-northern part of Asturias; it is approximately north-east of Oviedo, the capital of Asturias, and from Avilés. With a population of 273,744 as of 2023, Gijón is the Ranked lists of Spanish municipalities, 15th largest city in Spain. Universidad Laboral De Gijón
The Universidad Laboral de Gijón (Asturian language, Asturian: ''Universidá Llaboral de Xixón'') is a large building located in Gijón (Asturias, Spain) in the parish of Cabueñes. Originally built as a learning center for orphans, it currently hosts several cultural institutions. History Built between 1946 and 1955 by the Ministry of Labour (Spain), Ministry of Labour, it is considered the most important architectural work built in the 20th century in the Asturias region and, with its 270,000 m2, the largest building in Spain, even larger than the Monastery of El Escorial. The building was originally built to educate orphans whose parents had died as a result of working in the mining industry. It is currently a multi-use facility. ''Elogio del Horizonte'' () is a concrete sculpture located on the cliffsides of Gijón, Spain, overlooking the Cantabrian Sea. It stands tall and weighs . Carmen Moriyón
María del Carmen Moriyón Entrialgo (born 25 October 1966) is a Spanish surgeon and politician. She headed the list of Asturias Forum to the mayor of Gijón in the municipal elections of Spain in 2011, getting 9 councilors and becoming the first non-socialist mayor of Gijón since the 1979 elections thanks to the support of the Popular Party in the investiture. Carmen Moriyón is the daughter of Maximino Moriyón Álvarez and Margarita Entrialgo Álvarez, and widow of José Ramón Rodríguez-Galindo González a surgeon who died in 2009.
