Getxo
Getxo () (Spanish: ''Guecho'') is a town located in the province of Biscay, in the autonomous community of the Basque Country (autonomous community), Basque Country, in Spain. It is part of Greater Bilbao, and has 75,430 inhabitants (2023). Getxo is mostly an affluent residential area, as well as being the third largest municipality of Biscay. History Getxo (formerly spelt ''Guecho'') was a parish (''elizatea, ''anteiglesia'), originally a rural area, including a large beach at the mouth of the Estuary of Bilbao, centered on the little fishing village of Algorta. The parish council met at the church of ''Getxoko Andra Mari'' (Basque language, Basque) or ''Santa María de Guecho'' (Spanish) (both mean Saint Mary of Getxo), not far from the headland called Punta Galea. October 1978 Getxo Attack
The October 1978 Getxo attack was a mass shooting gun attack by the Basque separatist organisation ETA which occurred on 22 October in the Basque town of Getxo, a suburb of Bilbao. The attack occurred six weeks before a referendum to approve a new Spanish constitution. The targets were a group of four civil guards who were returning from policing a football game involving Arenas Club de Getxo. After the game had finished, the civil guards were returning to their barracks, walking along Maximo Aguirre Street in the town. Four ETA members, armed with machine guns and shotguns, who had been lying in wait behind the wall of the local Telefónica building, ambushed the civil guards, subjecting them to heavy gunfire before fleeing. Two of the civil guards were killed instantly, while the other two were seriously injured, with one of them dying in hospital four days later. Vizcaya Bridge
The Vizcaya Bridge (''Bizkaiko Zubia'' in Basque, ''Puente de Vizcaya'' in Spanish) is a transporter bridge that links the towns of Portugalete and Las Arenas (part of Getxo) in the Biscay province of Spain, crossing the mouth of the Nervion River. People in the area, and even the official website, commonly call it the Puente Colgante (literally "hanging bridge", used for ''suspension bridge'' in Spanish), although its structure is quite different from a suspension bridge. History The Vizcaya Bridge was built to connect the two banks which are situated at the mouth of the Nervion River. It is the world's oldest transporter bridge and was built in 1893, designed by Alberto Palacio, one of Gustave Eiffel's disciples. Biscay

Algorta
Algorta is a locality within the municipality of Getxo, in the province of Biscay, Basque Country, Spain. In 1996, the population of Algorta was 35,600. The Metro Plaza situated in Telletxe street is considered to be the center of town and commerce. The two most historically important plazas in town are St. Nicholas Plaza and St. Ignacius Plaza. Las Arenas
Areeta (''Las Arenas'' in Spanish) is a neighbourhood of Getxo (Biscay, Basque Country (autonomous community), Basque Country, Spain). It is an affluent residential area that was built over the sands of a beach where the Gobela Creek died into a diffuse delta at the mouth of the Estuary of Bilbao in the early 20th century. It is connected to Portugalete at the other side of the firth by the ''Vizcaya Bridge'' transporter bridge and offers a marina, a small beach that can unfortunately be polluted, and a monument to Evaristo de Churruca y Brunet, Evaristo Churruca, who planned and directed the channelization of the estuary. Sopelana
Sopela, formerly known as Sopelana, is a town and municipality located in the province of Biscay, in the autonomous community of Basque Country, northern Spain. The town is roughly 820 hectares in size, located in the comarca Mungialdea on the north east side of Bilbao and due east of the Nervión river estuary. In the municipality, other former towns like Larrabasterra were annexed to make Sopela larger. The population is 13,878 people, as recorded in the 2019 census. Punta Galea is a cape (geography), cape in Biscay, Basque Country (autonomous community), Basque Country, that stands in the limit of Getxo and Sopelana.
