Rhône-Alpes
Rhône-Alpes () was an administrative region of France. Since 1 January 2016, it is part of the new region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. It is located on the eastern border of the country, towards the south. The region was named after the river Rhône and the Alps mountain range. Its capital, Lyon, is the second-largest metropolitan area in France after Paris. Rhône-Alpes has the sixth-largest economy of any European region. Geography Rhône-Alpes is located in the southeast of France. The neighboring (pre-2016) regions are Bourgogne (Burgundy) and Franche-Comté to the north, Auvergne to the west, Languedoc-Roussillon to the southwest, and Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur to the south. Belledonne Massif
Belledonne ( ) is a mountain range () in the Dauphiné Alps (part of the French Alps) in southeast France. The southern end of the range forms the eastern wall of the mountains that surround the city of Grenoble. The range is noted for the spectacular scenery it provides the inhabitants of Grenoble, numerous ski areas, interesting geology, and a diverse range of alpine land types and uses. Testa del Rutor or Tête du Ruitor (3,486m) is a mountain of the Graian Alps in Aosta Valley, north-western Italy. Vanoise Massif
The Vanoise massif (, ) is a mountain range of the Graian Alps, located in the Western Alps. After the Mont Blanc Massif and the Écrins Massif it is the third-highest massif in France, reaching a height of 3,885 m at the summit of Grande Casse. It lies between Tarentaise Valley to the north and the Maurienne Valley in the south. The range is the site of France's first national park, established in 1963, Vanoise National Park. The ski resorts of Tignes and Val-d'Isère and the 2,770-metre-high Col de l'Iseran are located in the eastern part of the range. Gran Paradiso
The Gran Paradiso () or Grand Paradis ( ) is a mountain in the Graian Alps in Italy, located between the Aosta Valley and Piedmont regions. It is located in Gran Paradiso National Park. Etymology The Italian toponym ''Gran Paradiso'' derives, via the French ''Grand Paradis'', as a mistranslation from the Aosta Valley patois , which originally means 'large wall'. It is the same etymology as nearby . Geography The peak is the 7th highest mountain in the Graian Alps, with an elevation of 4,061 m. Briançonnais Zone
The Briançonnais zone is a zone in the Penninic nappes in the Western Alps which preserves continental crust rocks derived from the Briançonnais terrane. The Briançonnais terrane or continental ribbon was a narrow strip of continental crust. It was part of the European continental margin before the Early Cretaceous opening of the Valais Ocean, which separated it form it. It was the eastern tip of the Iberian block (which also encompassed, besides the Iberian Peninsula, the Corsica-Sardinia block and the Balearic Islands, which later rifted from Iberia). Because paleogeographic reconstructions of highly deformed pieces of crust are always difficult, in the past there was a dispute among geologists about weather the Briançonnais terrane had originally been part of the Eurasian plate or the Iberian block (which was a unit of the Eurasian plate).
