Ernesto Geisel
Ernesto Beckmann Geisel (, ; 3 August 1907 – 12 September 1996) was a Brazilian Army officer and politician, who served as the 29th president of Brazil from 1974 to 1979, during the Brazilian military dictatorship. Born to German Lutheran immigrants, Geisel attended military prep schools from an early age. He then moved to Rio de Janeiro, graduating as an artillery officer from the Military School of Realengo, now the Military Academy of Agulhas Negras. He entered politics in 1964 when he was appointed Chief of the Military House under President Castelo Branco. He was part of the group of Castelo Branco's military supporters who opposed Marshal Costa e Silva's candidacy for the presidency. Castelo Branco promoted him to the rank of Army General in 1966 and appointed him Minister of the Superior Military Court in 1967. Theo Geisel (physicist)
Theo Geisel (born 24 August 1948 in Limburg an der Lahn, Hesse) is a German physicist. Geisel is a director at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization and professor of theoretical physics at the University of Göttingen. His research is primarily concerned with the behavior of complex systems ranging from theoretical investigations in quantum chaos to nonlinear phenomena occurring in the brain. Biography Geisel studied physics in Frankfurt and Regensburg. After graduating from the University of Regensburg in 1975, he worked as Post-Doc at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart (1976–77) and at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (1978–79). In 1980, he returned to Regensburg as assistant professor. During 1983-87 he worked as a Heisenberg fellow, later he became professor for theoretical physics at the University of Würzburg (1988–89) and the University of Frankfurt (1989–96). Geisel (river)
Geisel () is a river of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. The source of the Geisel, the Geiselquell, is located in the village of Sankt Micheln just west of Mücheln. The Geisel flows east through Geiseltal, or Geisel valley, until it flows into the in Merseburg, thats runoff, the Klia, empties into the Saale. Origin of name It is probable that the name is related to Geusa, a small village in the Geisel valley dating back to the early 9th century, but since both names date back to the days of Charlemagne, the original spelling and etymology have been lost. One possibility is that the name originates from the Old High German ''gewi'', from the Gothic ''gavi'', (neuter) or ''gaujis'' (genitive), a medieval term for a region within a country, often a former or actual province. The name may also originate from the Langobardic patronym ''Giso'', a variant of ''Adalgis'', meaning "noble, precious promise." Geisel Valley
The Geisel valley () is a valley in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, situated west of Merseburg, Saalekreis district. It is named after the River Geisel which rises in Mücheln and is a tributary of the Saale, just under long. Its main settlements are Braunsbedra and Mücheln, which in the future will merge into the 'collective municipality' of ''Geiseltal''. The Geisel valley was quarried for coal from 1698 until the mines were closed in 1994; The mining of brown coal is first attested for 1698 near the Zöbigker grove but is most likely to be older. Initially, only twelve smaller pits emerged at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution in the late 19th century, which spread to large areas; ultimately, the Braunsbedra-Geiseltal mines became one of the largest connected mining regions in Germany. Geisel Library
Geisel Library is the main library building of the University of California, San Diego. It is named in honor of Audrey Geisel, Audrey and Theodor Seuss Geisel, the latter of whom is better known as children's author Dr. Seuss. The building's distinctive architecture, described as occupying "a fascinating nexus between Brutalist architecture, brutalism and Futurist architecture, futurism", has made it an iconic and widely recognized building on campus. The library is located in the center of the UC San Diego campus. The library was designed by William Pereira and opened in 1970 as the Central Library.
