GCap Media
GCap Media was a British commercial radio company formed from the merger of the Capital Radio Group and GWR Group. The merger was completed on 9 May 2005. It was listed on the London Stock Exchange and was a constituent of the FTSE 250 Index. On 31 March 2008, the company agreed on a takeover by the Global Radio for £375 million. This was completed on 6 June 2008, and the company became a wholly owned subsidiary of the Global Radio. On 1 November 2008, Global Radio discontinued using the name GCap Media. Pre-merger Capital Radio Group Capital Radio Group was, until May 2005, a London-based British radio group. The company was originally set up to operate a General Entertainment Independent Local Radio service in October 1973. Capital Radio was the second legal commercial radio station to launch in the UK, a few days after London news station LBC. LBC News is a British digital radio station owned and operated by Global. The sister station of LBC, it broadcasts rolling news 24 hours a day nationwide on DAB and Global Player. The station used to broadcast on analogue radio in Greater London on 1152 AM until Wednesday 30 October 2024. LBC (originally the London Broadcasting Company) is a British phone-in and talk radio station owned and operated by Global Media & Entertainment, Global and based in its headquarters in London. It was the UK's first licensed Commercial broadcasting, commercial radio station, and began to broadcast on Monday 8 October 1973, a week ahead of Capital London, Capital Radio. The launch of LBC also saw the beginning of Independent Radio News broadcasting, as LBC provided the service to independent local radio stations nationwide. Independent Local Radio is the collective name given to commercial radio stations in the United Kingdom. Capital Life, also known as Life, was a digital radio station broadcasting across the UK on the Digital One network and streamed online. Capital Life was due to be available on DTV but never launched due to the station's closure. About Capital Life was owned by GCap Media, having been launched by Capital Radio PLC before the company merged with GWR Group PLC. In 1999, it was one of the first DAB Digital Radio stations to launch on the Digital One multiplex in the UK. To start, the station had two presenters. It was based in a news studio used by Capital Gold London outside of breakfast hours. Later, it moved into a newly created Digital Broadcast studio in Leicester Square, which it shared with Capital Disney and Century London. Capital Disney was a British digital radio station aimed at 7 to 13 year olds which used to broadcast across the UK on DAB Digital Radio in selected areas. Capital Disney launched on 16 September 2002 as a joint venture between GCap Media PLC and The Walt Disney Company. It was also broadcast on Sky Digital, Tiscali TV, Virgin Media, and streaming online. The station announced on 14 May 2007 that it would close down on 29 June 2007. Capital Disney was one of the first radio stations in the country to use the newly developed Digital radio (DAB) format to provide a radio station specifically aimed at children and teenagers.
