Jeanne Fontbonne
Jeanne Fontbonne, CSJ (31 March 1759 – 22 November 1843), more commonly known by her name in religion St. John Fontbonne, was a French religious sister. She founded the Sisters of St. Joseph of Lyon in 1808 and served as its first superior general. Life Born in Bas-en-Basset, Haute-Loire, on 31 March 1759, Jeanne Fontbonne was the youngest child of Michel and Jeanne Theillère Fontbonne. In 1778 she entered a house of the Sisters of St. Joseph, which had just been established at Monistrol (Haute-Loire) by Bishop de Gallard of Le Puy. The following year she received the religious habit. At the age of 26 she was chosen by the community to be their Superior and remained there until the French Revolution. Fontbonne University is a private Catholic university in Clayton, Missouri, United States. Fontbonne University, established in 1923 as Fontbonne College, initially served as a women's college. Fontbonne College became co-educational in the 1970s. Its athletic teams compete in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. In 2023, there were 874 students enrolled. In March 2024, university officials made public their decision to cease operations by 2025. Washington University in St. Louis agreed to purchase the campus. Fontbonne Academy is a private Roman Catholic college preparatory high school for girls, located in Milton, Massachusetts, United States. It is located in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston. It was started in 1954 by the Sisters of St. Joseph. The school was fully accredited in 1959 by the New England Association of Secondary Schools and Colleges. Accreditation has been consistently renewed for ten-year periods. In January 2019, Fontbonne Academy changed its name to Fontbonne Early College of Boston. Enrollment Enrollment has multiplied from 97 students in 1954 to just under 400 in 2011. The student body is drawn from more than 45 cities and towns throughout the Boston area, MetroWest, and the South Shore. The school has a seven-acre campus with the original building that has been updated over the years to include science, technology and language labs. Fontbonne Hall is an all-girls, private, Roman Catholic high school in Brooklyn, New York, United States. Established in 1937 by the Sisters of St. Joseph, it is located within the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn. In 2013, celebrating its 75th year, school leadership noted that throughout its history, Fontbonne had educated nearly 10,000 women who “have become noted doctors, lawyers, engineers, leaders in business and the arts, educators, mothers, and even, like Sister Ita Ford, class of 1957, martyrs for their cause.” Making reference to the boroughs of New York City, Fontbonne's students predominantly come from southwest Brooklyn, southern Queens, and Staten Island.
