Fisk, Iowa
Fisk is an Unincorporated area, unincorporated community or ghost town in Adair County, Iowa, Adair County, Iowa, United States. History Fisk was established near the center of Richland Township, Adair County, Iowa, Richland Township. The first post office in Fisk was established in 1870. By 1901, Fisk was home to a creamery (the Blue Grass Creamery), a school, and the Fisk Post Office. However, with the introduction of Rural Free Delivery, the Fisk Post Office closed. In 1918, Fisk was described thus: "In Richland township, Adair county. 10 miles sw of Greenfield, the judicial seat, and 6 w of Orient, the nearest railroad station and banking point, whence mail is supplied by rural delivery." The directory went on to list two general stores: those of A.B. Creighton, and J.J. Perkins. In 1902, Fisk's population was 37, and in 1924, the population was reported as 28. Fisk is a small city in Butler County, Southeast Missouri, United States. It is located right along the Butler-Stoddard County line on U.S. Route 60, along the St. Francis River. The population was 312 at the 2020 census. Fisk is included within the Poplar Bluff Micropolitan Statistical Area. History A post office called Fisk has been in operation since 1899. The community was named after Samuel J. Fisk, the proprietor of a local sawmill. Fisk University is a Private university, private Historically black colleges and universities, historically black Liberal arts colleges in the United States, liberal arts college in Nashville, Tennessee. It was founded in 1866 and its campus is a historic district listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1930, Fisk became the first historically black institution to gain Higher education accreditation in the United States, accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). The Fisk Generating Station, also known as Fisk Street Generating Station or Fisk Station is an inactive medium-size, coal-fired electric generating station located at 1111 West Cermak Road in the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. It was sited near the south branch of the Chicago River to provide access to water for steam and barge traffic for coal, and closed down in 2012. The Fisk Rubber Company was an American tire company from Chicopee, Massachusetts, Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts. It was a major force in the US tire industry from the late 1900s to late 1920s. History In 1898, the Spaulding and Pepper Co was sold to Noyes W. Fisk and renamed the Fisk Rubber Co. It employed more than 600 people in 1910 and more than 3,000 during World War I (with a weekly payroll averaging $48,000). By 1917, the company employed 4,500 people with a $70,000 payroll. The company was headquartered in Chicopee, Massachusetts, Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts. In the 1920s, Fisk also had plants in New Bedford, Massachusetts, Jewett City, Connecticut, Pawtucket, Rhode Island.
