Islam is the second largest religion in England after Christianity. Most Muslims are immigrants from South Asia (in particular Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and India) or descendants of immigrants from that region. Many others are from Muslim-dominated regions such as the Middle East, Afghanistan, Malaysia and Somalia, and other parts of African countries such as Nigeria, Uganda and Sierra Leone. There are also many White Muslims in the country, most of which have Slavic and Balkan backgrounds (Bosnian, Albanian, Montenegrin, Kosovar etc.), as well as some ethnic English converts. According to the 2011 census, 2.7 million Muslims lived in England and Wales, up by almost 1 million from the previous census, where they formed 5.0% of the general population and 9.1% of children under the age of five.
